And I literally got nothing. I doubt I'd even beg not to get my shit pushed in like Louis did. I'd probably just shit my pants and cry while apologizing profusely over and over, trying to come up with excuses for why I overstepped and provoked him unnecessarily, maybe even telling him my date put me up to it and insisting I didn't want to bother him over a little noise. I'd tell him I had a bad day before curling in the fetal position and rocking back and forth, just whispering "sorry" over and over again until he either gave me the beating he threatened deliver or left me alone.

I sorta had this happen a decade ago at a pizza place. Three arab looking dudes rushed some white guy and started beating him up. I jumped in try to be diplomatic and one of the guys broke my headphones tearing them off my neck. The staff came out and shooed them away, calling the cops. They ended up coming back and I sat my table trying to look as small as possible.

I think the point of the scene was that Louie was scared of getting his ass beat, but that's not what normal huwhite guys would be concerned about. He actually DID do the right thing. Just like on Halloween when he broke that window. His mistake was going to some shitty cafe at night in NYC. They say it’s the city that never sleeps, but it absolutely does. Everyone’s supposed to be inside once it gets dark. You know, that's the part of the whole pathos of a scene like this. Well, if you want an honest but also macho answer, you have to rewind the situation back a few steps.

The proper thing to have done when on that date would have been to first recognize the group and likely just go somewhere else. It's the path of least resistance and it'll show you're protecting your date by moving her away from potential threats altogether.

The mistake Louis made was believing it wasnt going to be a problem, but then getting annoyed and thinking he could verbally egg on the group without attracting negative attention. I think a lot of people in modern "civilized" society think they can safely say words without being met with violence. That's not a judgment on what's right or wrong, just a pragmatic observation of natural consequence.

Now, in OP's pic, with how close the guy is, that's a bad position. He shouldnt have let the guy get that close in the first place. The only thing i can think of is to move back and begin to stand up on the seat, freeing yourself from the table and putting distance between you and the guy. You really dont wanna engage the fight with fists proper, at all, because there's a non-zero chance he could knock you out and stomp your head, either killing you or turning you retarded. Just create distance and tell the guy firmly to back off, just keep saying that and if the guy attacks, push him back with your legs and if you can push the guy back emough, tell your date to get up and go to the kitchen with the staff. If you can move around the guy, also go into the kitchen of the restaurant as this will bottleneck movement and you can find some kind of object to keep in front of you defensively.

But i digress, thats already a huge mess and you putting yourself and your date in unnecessary danger. Threat recognition and avoidance would've been the best move.
