Itโ€™s an unmarketable movie. No one looking at the title or posters has any idea what itโ€™s about. Is it a war movie? A drama? Sci-Fi?

The marketing is a confusing mess.

MICKEY 17 had the exact same problem.

>studios keep funding you because
The REASON that PTA got such a huge budget for this film wasn't ONLY because he secured Leo as the lead role, but ALSO because his old friend from the 90s Mike de Luca is now CEO of Warner Bros. This is by far the biggest budget PTA has ever had to work with on a movie, and if this bombs catastrophically then he'll have to go back to making his lower-budget flicks like Licorice Pizza.

It's the first PTA movie shot with IMAX in mind, and in VistaVision format. A movie like Weapons wasn't shot with IMAX-certified cameras, so it was an afterthought to market it for IMAX, for example.

Leo got paid $20 million up-front alone, plus the majority of the movie was shot in California which is a very expensive place to shoot. I remember Warner was trying to convince Todd Phillips to shoot Joker 2 in London instead of California so that they could reduce the budget instantly by something like 20%.

People were perplexed by the 200mil budget for Killers Of The Flower Moon. The studio clarified that with streaming deals now, actors no longer ask for Salary+ cut of the profits, they get Salary+ projected cut of the total profit (theatrical and streaming). So for Killers Leo was paid 40 million up front. Nearly a quarter of the entire budget went on one actor, and all the other top billed actors have a similar deal.

That's allegedly where these budgets are ballooning. There was an AppleTV movie with Matt Damon, Casey Affleck recently that was similar. Stars and director got huge payouts because the film is ultimately aimed at streaming.
Anonymous No.213833567
>>213833524
Oh, and they don't trust royalty systems with streaming, because of situations like Willow.

And this was also why The Toxic Avenger remake was on the shelf for years. Dinklage had it in his contract that it MUST get a theatrical release because they couldn't afford him without a gross profit sharing situation.

there were like 80 people there not counting extras, literally one lady just spent all day spraying the parking lot with a big spray bottle to make it look like it had rained for continuity
