I must give credit/thank Harperbro for giving me the gift of her last year, I'm ashamed to admit I didn't know of her until after she passed. She's the closest anyone else has come to making me feel the way
Nastassja
makes me feel. It's a shame I had to fall in love and grieve at the same time. I think I'm going to watch Grand Prix this weekend...

I'm not somebody who usually cares about critics at all, but that's a rare time they were right. It didn't have music or a score anywhere near as good as Top Gun despite getting a similar talent roster, the subject is far less interesting and presented in a far less interesting way than Top Gun (NASCAR is a fucking boring sport, especially the way it was featured here), the story is even more implausible and dumb but demands to be taken oh so seriously (the "romance" is sub-Cocktail-tier and far worse than in Top Gun, which is surprising given he's with Kidman), and overall the film is just nowhere near as polished, efficient, or effective as Top Gun ever was, and also lacks the historical or aesthetic context of Top Gun.
It's just a mediocre at best big-budget movie made at the end of an era of filmmaking.

Recently watched The 400 Blows and I must say it didn't hit as hard as I had hoped. I'm usually a sucker for movies that have the novelty factor of belonging to a certain genre I'm not used too, in this case French New Wave-- not that I really noticed anything too different that made its genre apparent to me. I just didn't connect with the themes even when I felt I should have; on paper it sounds like a film I would have loved. I connected a bit when I tried to remember what it was to be a boy but overall, it was fruitless effort. My main takeaway was that the boy's mom was a cunt, a real French cunt. Still, I'm intrigued and open to new wave and Truffaut films. It's just sad that this is heralded as one of the greatest films of the 20th century and it left no emotional impact on me even when I craved that from it.

Emotionally the film channels poetic realism tradition of 1930s, especially Jean Vigo; there's some neorealism influence as well. But mostly, for me at least, the emotional charge comes from the exhilaration of a young man making his first film - the markers of tracking shots from previous takes left in in the ending is not a mistake.

That's cool, I would never have come up with something like that. I can tell you enjoy the film on an intellectual level, something I find hard to do naturally. For me, the film has to hit me emotionally before I can put myself to task on appreciating it on an intellectual level.

That's why I'm telling you rewatch the film in few years. Good question. I don't think you should make a study course out of "getting into film" where you have to force yourself to watch or read anything, instead it should grow organically out of natural desire to know more about films that stayed with you. An important thing you should understand is that you shouldn't feel frustrated if you don't fully connect with certain films, you can always come back to them later when or if you feel like it. Like in the case of The 400 Blows, I guarantee you will want to come back to it when you learn more about its influences, from neorealism by way of Rosselini and Morris Engel to poetic realism by way of Renoir and Vigo. But to learn about Vigo and his city symphony A propos de Nice you will first have to learn about the Kaufman brothers and Dziga Vertov films... and this is just a joke example that the possibilities of exploration of cinema are endless and are all open before you.

I see, that makes sense, somewhat resonates with my experience-- not as highbrow, but something I feel is akin to what you're saying: I remember loving Zodiac and Seven, naturally I wanted more and sought out films like Dirty Harry, The French Connection, The Conversation all of which I ended up loving, but also where the threads of inspiration and intention became more clear in Fincher's work. Your advice about coming back to a film is pretty sound too and I'll try to take it to heart, I do tend to have a bad habit of writing off films if they don't resonate with me on the first watch, so many films so little time.

I felt bad the boy, how can one not? It's plain obvious that his childhood is a messed up one, but I felt that the film didn't really dwell on it enough to point where I could emotionally connect most of the time. The little boy seemed like a bit of a stoic too, though I have the impression that's probably a French thing.
