Why would one join a prison gang while only serving 16 months?
Was the one black dude getting raped really sufficient to convince Shot Caller to spend his life in prison?
The movie acknowledges how ridiculous this is with the DEA agent's little speech, and then never broaches the topic again.

Why did he do it? I don't think it would make a difference at that point, everybody already knew who he was.

He didn't mean it. He tried to save the guy in the riot, not realizing he was below a camera. that's what got his sentence extended

Because it's the set up for the movie. You have to suspend disbelief a bit. A realistic version would be longer, more boring and less engaging.

Go youtube, especially shorts. This is one of "those" movies that gets talked about endlessly because it ticks all the boxes. Like just about any war film.

I just watched the movie the other day after seeing /tv/ meme it for years.
It's not bad, but the motivations of the protagonist are genuinely inexplicable.

Movie plot conveniences combined with the character's mentality. He was just some middle class guy that fucked up and wound up in a prison full of murderers. His general character is smarter than most along with not being the sort to take things lying down.

Because that makes for a more compelling story that audiences would enjoy viewing. Nobody wants to sit around in real time seeing real boring jail or prison. That's not gonna get audiences.

Not sure how you figured this. It tracks with plenty of other movies
>otherwise boring everyman but a bit more clever than most
>finds himself trapped in hostile territory
>adapts and overcomes over his savage new surrounds
It's been done a million times over, although for good reason imo, makes for good stories.

Bottles breaks it down when gives the "warrior" speech. Money joins the gang out of fear but he begins to love the experience of being a gang member the same way he loved being a stock broker or whatever he was in the world. He loses sight of what he was supposed to do (serve his sentence and go home) and it cost him dearly. Everything that happens after he shanks the toad is the consequence of Money's hubris.

anon, I watched a movie last month about prisoner rehabilitation through horse taming, it had exactly two violent scenes and otherwise was mostly about the protag's emotions and the horse he takes care of.

I just checked and it grossed nearly double what Shotcaller did.
