I grew up loving horror. Watched all the Universal Monster movies with my mom, then all the Hammer equivalents. Absolutely adored Alien and Evil Dead. But for some reason, I am incapable of watching horror in theaters these days without closing my eyes when a jump scare is coming. How do I get over this? I just got out of Weapons, and even though there were only two or three jump scares, I had to close my eyes in the lead up. I feel like my brain is fucking broken and it's making me miserable because I swear I like the genre. I'm able to watch Eggers horror just fine, but the less artistic horror has me avoiding looking most of the time.

Land is good.

Never really bothered exploring 70s horror outside of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Tourist Trap, but this was a pretty fun watch. Just liked how surreal it was, from the editing to the sound effects, to the fact that the Tall Man is this weird psychic entity that has this army of dwarfs on another planet. Still has some good shots in it too, like the POV of those weird drilling balls. The "older brother was dead the whole time" twist was kind of disappointing though, even if it still fit perfectly with how dreamlike the movie felt

Breaking studio backing up for the decade by proving you could make a hit without them made it a real free for all, and also made studios step up their game

I'm not sure it's possible to spoil them, they're pretty wild. But honestly Phantasm as a series rather than individually is one of the best I've seen. It feels more connected, like it's a mini series that was shot over several decades. Watching the characters grow older, idk it's watching a person's life rather than a bunch of films. And the central theme is these friends, so as they age and experience so much together the theme gets stronger.

I feel like something good is going to happen to me. I feel like something amazing has happened. It hasn't reached me yet but it's on its way.

I just found out that there's an italian version of that subgenre of ridiculous Japanese gore films with copious practical effects (like Tokyo Gore Police, Meatball Machine, Machine Girl, etc.)
The Necrostorm stuff feels incredibly similar in tone, a combination of goofiness and extreme nihilism and sadism, all probably directed by someone who is mainly a vfx guy and doesn't really care much about the script
There's something weirdly intriguing about this niche to me. Although the films often tend to be disappointing and rather dull, they can contain moments of brilliance

I watched it for the first time recently and I can agree with you. Why hang out protecting a bunch of scientists who are jerking off when you could just take the helicopter and fuck off. One thing that was left unsaid, it never really shows what lady scientist was working on, it's insinuated she's looking for a cure. But she isn't doing shit during the movie because all their effort is going towards playing fido with Bub. The men are literally dying so that grandpa can play with his toys. Should have bumped that guy off, then taken half the science team and half the military guys out of the base in two or three helicopter trips. Seems like a good compromise so that spiritual black man won't refuse to fly.

Just watched Alien Romulus and, while it did a good job of filling in some extended lore here and there, it was kinda shit altogether.

It was shame that a film with so much effort put into the sfx, a good lead etc. was wasted on a greatest hits playlist. Even the big baby retard really was just an engineer and a hybrid, which we saw in Prometheus.
In hindsight, Ridley was right in making Prometheus. He saw the well had run dry and made a film that had a lasting pop culture effect by introducing new elements. Wasn't perfect but it was better than beating the horse again.
