I think TOS->VOY are timeless enough to stay evergreen. People will still be making TikToks about this weird old show theyโ€™ve been getting hooked on. Everyone is sick of the streaming model where theyโ€™re asked to wait over two years for 8 hours of high budget mediocrity. I was quite disappointed in the new seasons of Wednesday and Severance.

TOS is timeless but is still very obviously a show from the 1960s. It takes place in a specific era with a certain look and I've never had a problem accepting that the same can be true for Enterprise. Like why is it so hard to suspend your disbelief and accept that the style of the 2260s is similar to the 1960s and the style of the 2150s looks like the early 2000s. No, it's terrible. You have all of these guys at the top of the Vulcan High Command talking all breathlessly angry, speaking in tones of suspicion and distress -- the acting is terrible, honestly the worst Vulcan acting in any Star Trek and it's not even close.

It's particularly terrible juxtaposed against a Tuvok episode where Russ gives a proper Vulcan performance.
Listen to this guy. He just fucking yelled
>IT DOESN'T EXIST!
This is absurd and if you know anything about Star Trek you should feel embarrassed to enjoy this shoddy portrayal of one of its classic races.

Let's be real here, ENT was never getting a season 5. It's lucky it got a 4th. By '05 Paramount was so disinterested in the TV franchise and UPN was in such disarray that nothing was going to save Enterprise. Fans tried to start up another letter campaign and the studio just politely told them to fuck off. It's even plausible that the show from the beginning was more or less just a contractual obligation that Paramount owed to Berman, and they deliberately ran it into the ground with constant budget cuts and attempted meddling.

ENT was the only Trek since TOS to be fighting for its life each year, and in some ways it shows in the creative decisions. Unlike what happened with VOY, the samey formula of the early seasons was often more insurance for the network than Rick Berman's own risk aversion. The Xindi War was a concession to the studio to have a big high stakes shakeup to boost ratings, and the semi-serialized format of season 4 was a compromise between the plans of the writers and the funding cuts and the rush to cover as much story ground as possible before the end. The cancellation wasn't official for some time but I think they all knew they were walking on thin ice. ENT sometimes achieved greatness within those constraints but was sadly never allowed to really blossom.

So I watched SNW s3e6, the one with the doomsday ship, since it's the only episode this season that looked interesting. Tbh I haven't watched SNW since S1 because it just didn't do it for me, and it still kinda doesn't, not completely.

Generally speaking, I appreciate that the intro is back to being "To boldly go..." and not whatever they were doing with STD and PIC, and that the show is not *totally* grimdark and cynical in tone. It feels like the closest they've gotten to classic trek so far, and yet...

Regarding the episode itself, it works well enough, and the premise is even like the TOS one with the giant space blunt. The episode seems to fly by though, despite having the same 45ish minute runtime as classic trek, which makes it feel rushed. However, it also seems like there's scenes missing; anyone else get that feeling? Pike and Laan get shot at once by the scavengers, and in the next scene after they've run away, Laan's dumping exposition about how they're shooting iron particles. When did we learn this information? They also mention how the scavs absorb phaser fire unlike anything they've ever seen, and that they don't know how, but in their next encounter they go straight for the glowing weakspot despite never mentioning it. Near the end, Kirk commands to attack the vessel as the Enterprise escapes, but Spock says that the tentacles were unaffected. Next shot is them shooting at ??? inside the ship. It was mentioned earlier in the episode that they saw part of the engineering section of a klingon D7 in there, is that what they were meant to be shooting at? It sure didn't look like the display that was shown earlier, or again, even mentioned what they were even targeting in there. The twist that they were human was neat, but it felt wasted, since all of them died in space despite all being in EVA suits.

tl;dr - idk, 7/10 for effort, felt incomplete, but still fun enough as far as modern trek goes

Strange New Worlds would be better if the Spock guy was better at playing Spock. Outside of plot reasons, Spock is just too obviously emotional. The actor seems to have trouble actually playing his role straight. Also, the writers don't know how the ships work. Sometime in season 1 a ship shoots the nacel of the Enterprise. It cuts to the dyke pilot who says impulse engines are down. The impulse engines aren't on the nacels. I don't mind the captain, but no legacy characters act like themselves. I hate the guy who plays Kirk, he's just not suave enough to be Big Jim. Also hate how they constantly reference left wing ideas. Yes its Star Trek but never once were the words, "socialist utopia thing," ever said in any series before Nutrek. The Federation isn't a fucking socialist utopia, nor is it even remotely a stateless society. It's a democratically structured empire that still uses currency and trades with other empires.
