Falling victim to a radical new virus, Goku passed from the Earth leaving his loved ones behind. Unfortunately this unhappy occasion was merely a foreshadowing of the horrible tragedies that were still to come. Six months later, on an island 9 miles southwest of South City, a dreadful duo launched an attack. Coming in the defense of the inhabitants were Earth’s special forces. Piccolo was the first to try and the first to die. Vegeta was next to fall, then Yamcha, then Tien, even Krillin was destroyed by the ruthless duo. Two artificial beings with strength beyond normal conception have appeared out of no where. It is the beginning of a new era for Earth, an era of darkness.

Oh, I misread this. As to why they didn't gather the balls to cure him before he died, the disease seems to act really fast from what we saw of Goku vs 19. It's quite possible he was just doing fine and then a few hours later he was dead.

If the androids come and ravage earth when Goku is supposed to be hit by this virus, then how did they invent the virus cure? Was medical research really going on as androids reeked havoc on the planet?

From what we've seen in the show Goku scummed to the illness the day the androids arrived so it's possible the others weren't able to get to them in time. Plus the androids probably killed Piccolo which means no dragon balls.
