i would have to say it's even one layer abstracted again, when the good bits hit i tend to feel a kind of rush of something, like, vague action energy... but if i tried to find an association with any actual emotion, there isn't. That's part of why it's soulless. It's sort of inhuman like just pressing the music nerve without going through the usual faculties of meaning OR emotion

And it kind of makes sense right? Why was he a musician at all? Because his dad told him to sing and would beat him if he didn't perform. Why was he excellent at is technically? Because the better he performed, the better mood his dad would be in, the less beatings.

This is what I've been constantly saying about zoomers. They are TRULY soul-dead. They utterly lack the capacity to understand art or subtext or meaning. They can only understand the things that are concretely, explicitly explained to them word for word. They get confused and angry at anything else, consequently they hate everything made before they were born. They're literally the emotional equivalent of colorblind, they can't even comprehend what they're missing looks like.

The op is distinctly displaying the traits described: the inability to perceive anything beyond the concrete. This trait is endemic of generation z, brought about by corrupt marxist education that atrophied their ability to appreciate art, and being raised by smartphones. To a zoomer, emotion, meaning, imagery, spirituality, taste, texture, movement, all these things seem like only incoherent "randomness" because they lack the context to interpret them.

This. Real music evokes feelings through itself. Go and listen to a Tchaikovski piece. No vocals. If you ask "but what is it about", you are a literal cretin. It's not about "understanding" it. There's nothing to be "understood" in the first place. Music is about being felt.
Apart from that, pop music lyrics are filler anyway in 99 % of cases, making up for an otherwise bland composition. If you want "real" music, the last thing to look for is contemporary pop music.

He was extremely talented but not a genius. What i mean is that he could take any song and make it good in his own style, but he couldn't make a song that would become successful if if was someone else covering it. Alien Ant Farm's cover of Smooth Criminal is a perfect example of this. His songs are really nothing special without his own magic
