The only reason he doesn’t beat up Rent Boy and co. every time he sees them is because he actually knew and grew up with Rent Boy since they were wee lads a l and that has created this weird notion of loyalty/attachment that makes him think they are all good mates even though in reality most of them are just terrified of Franco and humour him because it’s safer to be on his good side and risk being wrecked by him.

I think in the book it’s even mentioned how Renton when he was a teen and still in school stumbles into Begbie by accident and he’s all “oh fuck, I thought I was free of this guy”.

Most people in the UK live and die in the same town or city neighbourhood they were born and grew up in, people you knew as kids will always be around you to a degree. Yes. Begbie is a complete lunatic. That’s why even when Spud, Sick Boy and Renton are hanging out with him everyone is constantly walking on eggshells. Nobody in the group likes or trusts Franco.

Hell they aren’t really even a real friend group, it’s a collection of junkies mostly that just spend time together. The only genuine friendship is between Spud and Rent Boy. Renton and Sick Boy have certain affinity and respect for one another but also don’t really mind committing betrayal. IIRC Sick Boy is mostly mad by the events of the first movie’s climax because he didn’t get to rip off everyone first.

I mean Americans do have this too but there’s more mobility in moving across the country for school and jobs and there’s also way bigger cities everywhere so unless you never leave your bumfuck town or local neighbourhood you don’t get as easily stuck with certain people.

All characters are drenched in toxins and drugs, theire opinions can't be taken seriously. All I see is a person suffering from not fitting in with the rest of his people and a lot of strenght that goes to waste because all he gets is negative feedback of those who are comfortable with being ruled by unseen lords and laws that center around conformity. The rule of the masses equals the surpression of the few. All Begbie did was to follow the rules of his perception of the way the world should be. Everyone has the right to call him out for it but no one has the right to decide about whos version of the world is correct.
