Was this really the best film of 2024?
It won the Palm d'Or and the Oscar for Best Picture, literally fourth movie to ever do so.

Looking at it technically, it doesn't do anything crazy. It is just a plain depiction of events that take place over like a week. The acting is pretty good, the story is fairly interesting, but all that alone just makes it a "good" movie, not a movie of peerless caliber.

So what was it? Was it the subtleness of emotion, the pseudo-comedic tone broken by empty tragedy? Was it the elevation of a lurid subject matter to a caliber of appraisal that freed the more refined movie-goer from their usual constraints of propriety? Was it just the "least bad" movie of the year with respect to narrative and formic decisions?

Best film was Smile 2 followed by The Substance.
Anora was unwatchable trash filled with an annoying whore screeching.

Furiosa was my favorite but I didn't watch this. It looked pretty unappealing.

i think there should have been more violence--some slaps, slight bruised lips, etc, would have made me like it better, especially btn the russian and anora, then the ending that there was something btn them, some empathy realized should have made it more convincing, like beauty and the beast in reverse and that the actual beasts were the russian family

It was the final scene, and the hostage scene

the rest of the movie is basic fare, those two made the whole movie

Almost every best picture Oscar winner never deserves its win. This will be forgotten while Conclave, The Substance, and Furiousa will stand the test of time

The war is finishing now. It wouldn't have the same money edge.

It was an 8.5 out of 10 film that in times past would never have been nominated for best picture. It winning is emblematic of current times.
