Frankly his worst role has been Late Night with Stephen Colbert.
Strangers with Candy and the Colbert Report were better uses of his sense of comedy. Frankly pandering to the CBS Crowd (home of 6 NCIS shows) ultimately left him a bit limited in what he could do.
He's also not as good at playing himself as he is playing someone adjacent to himself. Playing a late night host generally made him come off as who he was a preachy educated liberal with a touch of Southern self-hate.
He will be back because he's in high demand and hopefully in the form of a character where he's best suited.

As a Democrat, he was best politically when he was a satire of his opposition as opposed to a representative for his position.
That being said, that too is a dead position, he can't just go back to the Colbert Report when between Jesse Watters on Fox News and guys like Charlie Kirk these guys are more of a satire of themselves.
With Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity there was a tinge of honesty and seriousness to their position, even with O'Reilly a pseudo-intellectualism.
But Jesse Watters is already a failed comedian listing off idiotic conservative takes every night on Cable TV, if he does a Podcast Charlie Kirk and Matt Walsh are many degrees more absurdly stupid in their delivery and take than Stephen Colbert's Colbert Report character could possibly be.
He'll find his last decade or so in entertainment somewhere. A Podcast, with Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello would probably get traction fast.

>I just want to say that the idea that Stephen Colbert‘s show was losing $40 million a year is beyond nonsensical. These alleged insiders who supposedly analyze the budgets of the shows — I don’t know who they are, but I do know they don’t know what they’re talking about. The financial loss reports seemed to only be focused on advertising revenue and have completely forgotten about affiliate fees, which number in the hundreds of millions — probably in total billions — and you must allocate a certain percentage of those fees to late-night shows.
>It really is surprising how little the media seems to know about how the media works. There’s just not a snowball’s chance in hell that that’s anywhere near accurate. Even that — that’s all you need to know. Suddenly he’s losing $40 million a year? I will tell you, the first 10 years I did the show, they claimed we weren’t making any money — and we had five times as many viewers on ABC as we do now. Who knows what’s true? All I know is they keep paying us — and that’s kind of all you need to know.

You know what really pissed me off? It's that people completely forgot about the context of the "Reality has a well known liberal bias" quote. He was playing a Bill OReilly type. Basically his point is the world is neutral but conservatives are so paranoid they think even the world has a left leaning bias.
Now retards quote that to mean the rest of the world is inherently liberal and left leaning, because it's the natural state of things, and that America is the odd one out because it's so right leaning. They never point out that outside of the US and a select few anglosphere countries everybody hates LGBTQ and racial diversity garbage.

He may still be political, but it will be with an underlying comedy to it.
I also think that last bit about a podcast with Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello is realistic. Sedaris has an intellectualism to her but also has been making her means mostly off voiceover stuff and Star Wars slop so they're all in the right position to do a podcast that might come off as just the right amount of smart, absurd and stupid. Albeit slightly less Boomer than Bill Maher's podcast.

I’d argue Colbert has been far more boomer than marh is since taking over the late show. Marh has always been a political comic and knows how to carry himself as an entertainer and a satirist (I misspelled it and it got autocorrected to satanist which seems apt) but Colbert has always just been an actor so worked better on his Comedy Central show because the character gave him enough distance to actually make comedy, him losing that just has him preaching on stage about how amazing the democrats are 5 nights a week without the expectation of humor or impartiality.

Jon Stewart and his consequences has been disastrous for journalism and nerds expectation of the media and what it is and means

What’s the last bit or sketch that you found funny that Colbert has done? What has been his Tomahawk moment?

Losing The Tonight Show and going to TBS was the best thing that could have happened to Conan. Peak Conan was him in the late slot, and it was immediately clear that him on TTS was going to be an extremely watered down version of his old show. You can find hours of clips of him on YouTube with very little from his time there, because the only funny moment I can think of was when Norm came on and roasted him for losing the show.

Most of you don't have the attention span to read and comprehend this, but:

Conan traditionally had the lead in latino viewership. Way more than any of the other late night hosts. When Late night shifted into a pro-Democrat messaging model during the 2010s, this is when Conan became more and more vocal about news affecting immigrants, Haiti, and latin americans.

When you peel back the business behind late night, suddenly you realize these mouthpieces all got paid to hit certain targets.
