You can fit 52 pallets in a semi, and 95 DVD players per pallet. In 2001 dvdplayers sold at $200, that truck is carrying almost exactly 1 million dollars worth of dvdplayers. Adjusted for inflation that's 1.82 million.

Yes, I watched this movie on VHS as a kid and never considered being able to afford/watch it on a DVD player.

DVD players didn't go mainstream until PS2 allowed everyone to own one.

I paid like $450 for my first player back in the late 90s and that was like a basic-bitch, "Look, it actually does play the disc!" model. I think next one up was $999 or something.

Dunno, but this reminds me of when I watched someone hack a DVD player's connections to work with a TV that only had a coaxial port in a barn that was converted for a living space. This was in 2002. Tried to get with some chick, failed. But we had a burn barrel for heat nearby, as it was the autumn. Good times. Lotta pot was smoked.

Yes and no. It was a super weird time because the price of DVD players started to plummet from insane prices to medium range prices around holiday 2001. So for a while they were still pretty pricey, but I remember around that holiday I got my first one for christmas (a cheap apex branded one) for like $120.

This nigga knows. Even though PS2's were sold out and getting resold for twice that much, still worth it to get the latest console plus a DVD player. Even though you had to pay extra for the remote control. Alternatively you could buy a DVD-ROM for your PC but they weren't cheap and there was no way to play the video on your TV in front of the comfy couch unless you wanted to invest in yet more hardware, something like a PCI card for RCA-out.

When the script was written and production started, yes. 500$ each (in 2000 dollars). A truck full of them could've easily been worth over a million (plus the value of the truck itself).
When the movie actually showed in theaters? They were worth like 200$ by then. Still a worthwhile heist. The PS2 launch really drove down dvd player prices, because it was basically the cheapest DVD player you could buy as at the end of 2000 (300$).

... you say that. But the Easiest "DIY" (basically you spend less than a million dollars developing it) throttleable rocket is a hybrid design using a solid fuel and nitrous oxide as the oxidizer - including using common nitrous bottles, nozzles, and solenoid valves that can be found at pretty much any "speed shop".

The reason why supras were so highly regarded was because the engine could be boosted to the moon, and they came with turbochargers from the factory. 700hp supras with stock engines were not unheard of back then.... and it was very rare to even find ANY car that was making more than 500hp.

You could just shove larger springs into the wastegates and make over 400hp to the wheels. That's like 50$ and 20 minutes worth of mods.

ps2 came out in USA in 2000. the cost of a name brand dvd player in that year was more than the cost of a ps2, a big selling point for the console early on was the fact that it was cheaper than a dvd player.
