The Anderson movies couldn’t decide who it wanted the Big Bad to be. I don’t even remember who the villain was in Apocalypse, but in Extinction it’s Jorah Mormont, but then it turns out that Wesker is in charge of Umbrella, but then he tells Alice that the Red Queen is in charge of Umbrella, and joins forces with the good guys in order to take out the Red Queen, but psyche, it was a double-cross, and he gets everyone but Alice killed, and then Jorah Mormont is back again, but he’s giving Wesker the orders this time because he’s the real Jorah, and the Jorah from the other movie was a clone of him.

Hey, do you like the established characters from the games? Well fuck you, because they all die offscreen, and the writer/director’s wife is the chosen one savior of humanity.

And despite what a mess the Anderson movies are, they’re the Godfather or Citizen Kane compared to that horrible Netflix series.

One issue is that RE protagonists are too powerful for the cinematic zombie genre. In Night of the Living Dead and the lineage of films it spawned, the principal characters are usually ordinary people who are ill-prepared for survival in the zompocalypse, with the dramatic tension arising from their incompetence. They might have guns and there might be a policeman or a soldier in their group, but any possible advantages these bring are offset by the bungling civilians and the burden of responsibility they lay on their companions.

It's a different situation in Resident Evil, which has always been a power fantasy in some degree. Even in the first two games, the "pure" survival horror games, you play as a singular fucking badass who alone kills all the zombies, giant spiders, and mutant tyrants with your magnum and rocket launcher. Then from RE4 onwards it's fast, flippy-kick action all the way. So when directors and animators are tasked with adapting Resident Evil, they look at the obvious action hero aspect and take their work down that route. Horror fans come to the films hoping for a claustrophobic, anxiety-inducing zombie film in the style of Romero, but instead they get over-the-top action fare in both the Anderson and animated films, because the source material is best suited to that.

I kind of liked the third, I think. To be fair, while the atmosphere and locale of the first two games is nice, they don't really lend themselves to a "good" movie, since the story, characters and most of the concept are really dumb. I feel like you could make something fun from them, thoughever. I would say James Wan's style on Malevolent would suit it best, but people hated that film.

The Fly and The Thing are both ultimately adaptations of acclaimed short stories. Resident Evil has nothing like that to draw from.
