There are only two types of movies made anymore. Movies that are too pretentious or too lowbrow. No audience exists for good cinema. There is a distinct lack of mid tier self indulgent kino these days. The 80s, 90s and 00s, hell even the 10s were full of movies of all genres that took themselves seriously so you could actually enjoy the story and everything without being reminded every 5 seconds that it is in fact just a movie.

I saw The Core for the first time a few days ago and the only reason I hadn’t seen it already is because all I have ever heard about it is that Armageddon is better. BUT I was bored and it popped up while I was browsing on my favorite illegal streaming site and so I decided to watch it. Sure the premise of the movie is absolutely retarded but I was immediately sucked into the story and the character drama because it took itself so seriously that I forgot I the western world is falling apart for 2 hours.

No modern movie has done this for me for at least 5 years.
