The magical realism horror thing is a lot more common in south america and southeast asia I think where superstitions are still very much alive. Aterrados and When Evil Lurks are definitely like that then you have Joko Anwar and Timo Tjahjanto films from Indonesia.
I'm surprised there's not that many horror movies about satanic cults from Mexico. Borderland and Perdita Durango are the only ones I can think of off hand.

That's pretty cool, that also reminds me I should watch that doc on the Romero Resident Evil script.
Also yeah it's a really neat movie. I liked the part where since they're doing research on a (fictional) director from Baltimore so they just call John Waters on the phone.
