At this point I'm not entirely sure Disney's even in the film business with Marvel anymore. They previs action setpieces before directors are attached, roll film before there's a finished script, some actors have appeared in crossover movies without ever even meeting another performer on-set, they do reworkings in post that'd make Suicide Squad blush, it's quite bizarre.
If Gunn's agenda with rebooting DC is to make sure that they're made like real films again then that's absolutely fine by me. Something doesn't have to be devoid of all passion and creativity just because it's working with an established IP.

I don't think it's just that he reads comics, it's that he's excited to show you the weird shit instead of trying to make a sanded-down version that doesn't scare the normalfags. Even a mediocre film with genuine enthusiasm and excitement for what it's about is infinitely more enjoyable than a film of similar quality that wants you to know it thinks it's about something stupid and is above it somehow.
