I recently rewatched Batman Forever and it's largely as bad as I remember. It's like they just conclude Val Kilmer can't act. But the stoic Bruce Wayne is kind of genius.
Jim Carrey overdoes it but the worst sin is Tommy Lee Jones trying to compensate for Carrey and overdoing it himself.
In retrospect it's flawed but also not as awful as remembered, but still bad.
However, Batman and Robin, on rewatch, is FUCKING AMAZING.
The pacing and vibe are on point from the onset.
If I had a cliche of the 1990s, this lives within it perfectly without overdoing it AT ALL. It's amazing.
All excesses in this film are on tone and on point.
The only reason it's remembered poorly is because it came right when the 90s was getting over itself and wanted to move on.
It's actually incredible.
You have to look at the shot for shot visual language of the film, and it's really incredibly genius.
The writing is clean and 1930/1970 pure serial pulp perfection. It comes off as 90s cheese but it's so much more than that.
Just watch From Dusk Til Dawn before this for the right pallette cleanse.
