Likely guy Pierce's character is willing to adopt the boy into his family as a way to get the boy and his daughter to emotionally bond so that when he's dead someone will be there to protect his daughter, an adult male would probably just end up raping and killing her but if he can get the boy to bond with her while they are both still young her chances of survival increases, probably why he spent time spying on them cause he was trying to figure out if the kid was a little psycho or not and he could tell viggos character wasn't gonna last much longer
