I would consider having characters, giving those characters motivations and making those characters not retarded to be storytelling basics, but I'll grant you production value. It definitely looks like Alien and at times it even feels like Alien, but the story is retarded and there are no characters in the show.
Remember the Peter Pan theming that had all the subtlety of a burning clown? Remember that stellar scene where Joe Hermit was introduced? Where Wendy exposited a few bullet points about what can laughably be called Joe's "character" while b-roll of him walking through the city played? Remember how we never actually see any of his supposed positive attributes and are expected to care about him anyway? Remember how Wendy's entire character is defined by her relationship to Joe and wanting to reunite with Joe and then wanting to save Joe? What great protagonists! What great storytelling!
Remember when Boy Kavalier sends prototypes worth trillions to the crash site of a deep space research vessel containing fuck knows what? Remember how "the loss of even one prototype would be devastating"? Seems pretty dumb to send a bunch of 12 year olds with no training and no experience in any kind of situation into an unknown situation. Guess it's a good thing they all inexplicably knew that nothing on that research vessel would be harmful to the hybrids. Remember when Wendy picked up the blade from the paper cutter even though her understanding of the mission was "rescue people, clean up"? It's almost like she knew that she would need it even though there should have been no way that she could know that she would need it. Can she psychically communicate with aliens and the writers?
I'm going to continue watching the show and I'm even somewhat enjoying seeing where they're going with all of this, but if Alien: Earth clears the low bar for "decent storytelling basics" then there's a fuckin problem.
