This is a decent 6.5/10 or a 7/10 film, why is it obscenely overrated by other people? I struggle to see what makes this so special. it's obviously a hopeful story, but as a movie it is mundane and ordinary.

It is special because it’s about hope, friendship, and human resilience. Extraordinary because it turns a bleak setting into a story of triumph, with one of the most satisfying endings in film history. Not to mention NO WOMEN.

>generic bad guy gets rekt asspull ending
>one of the most satisfying in film history
I really feel out of the loop with how people regard this movie. it feels nothing special to me and completely unworthy of all the "THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER"isms thrown at it.

It's deep and poignant for redditors

I've asked myself the same question.
Nothing about it is incredible, the soundtrack, the acting, the story is all solid, not spectacular (Green Mile in comparison is much better IMO)
I rarely see people put it in their top 10's, but everyone does seem to like it, to be fair.

don't let the reddit worship of any movie even remotely cross your mind, that alone probably made you dock a half a point off for no reason

>generic bad guy gets rekt asspull ending
Not a generic bad guy. Respectable on the surface but corrupt underneath, using religion and authority to mask greed and cruelty. That hypocrisy makes him far more chilling than a plain bad guy. The ending is satisfying because Andy’s escape is the perfect payoff: years of quiet patience finally outsmart the corrupt warden, justice is served, and Red finds hope again, contrasting Brooks’ hopelessness.
I don’t think it’s the best movie ever either it definitely is predictable and boring at times but I won’t deny it’s good and there are profound points to be made. It’s just easy to digest for the general audience. Retards watch it and go “He escape da jail after long time and he wuz innocent! So inspiring!”

I've never met a person who didn't like it. You get online edgelords who say they didn't, but virtually any person you ask in real life enjoyed the movie.

Its very emotionally evocative in a mostly authentic way, simple as.

Yeah kind of strange they show gaurds turning over rooms but never think to check the fucking 4 foot poster covering half the wall. And if Andy wasn’t the last cell in the row he simply would have been fucked. Still a good movie though.

It's one the most overused "subversive" trope in cinema. Not a crime in and of itself if it's done well instead of just instead of used as just a lazy charcter trait to at pseudo depth to mediocre writing. An example of it being done well would be Eli Sunday in There Will Be Blood
