But not everyone watching a kdrama is going to have vested interest in them or Korean culture, especially on more general platforms like Netflix/Disney+. Viki has roots in fansubbing and specifically caters towards asian drama fans, who are more willing to be confronted with/learn about unknown terms and culture. So they can get away with keeping kinship terms and such. More general platforms have no such expectation for their audience and prioritize accessibility, running with the assumption that their average viewer is not going to know wtf an oppa is (rightfully so imo). Could they do better to mitigate the loss of nuance? Perhaps, but I don't think "just leave in all the kinship terms untranslated" is really the best answer

I gave them the old college try. I was enjoying Kill Me Love Me, but some anon had to spoil it for me and dropped it. I was enjoying it until then.

I tried watching the cdrama about a girl who is stuck repeating her death scene, dropped that too.

If Chinese had a more pleasant tone (and I understand they have many dialects) like how they speak in Kill Me Love Me, then I believe that cdramas would be more popular.

As a non-chinese speaker, the language just sounds jarring with all the pitches and tones I hear often.

Finished watching "Queen of Tears" and "Crash Landing on You". Top notch, loved both.
I watched the first episode of "It's Okay to not be Okay" and "Goblin" and so far found both weird as fuck, didn't like them at all. The former has a weird story and the latter feels "off" as fuck, from the stor and the way scenes are recorded to the annoying soundtrack that plays NON STOP throughout the entire first episode. I saw both being highly recommended everywhere, so maybe I'm not approaching this with the right "mindset" or something.

Finished Oh My Ghost last night, was decent but a little bit pedestrian. Was very memeable in regards to a the female lead's "dey, Chef" catchphrase. Reminded me a lot of Coffee Prince, the restaurant looked like the same set and she was even sent to Europe for the final episode to ride European cock for a few years.

C-dramas focus way too much on romance. The sad part is, it's all lazy romance—they don't even try to innovate.

i get why translations are dumbed down for the larger audience. it can be a lot of work to translate or even get across the nuances of the language and culture and the non fandom audience probably won't be interested. what's interesting is in comedy shows there's usually a ton of word play humour which is very difficult to translate. i've seen a few fansubs which do a reasonable job of using a similar analogy or write out a long explanation of the humour. this is incredibly dedicated and fantastic, and sadly, a dying breed.
