IDK man it's more of a 'vibes' book. It's not really about laying out some kind of thesis, it's more about showing a character with all these very positive traits choosing to be the worst person in the world, and then asking you to think about if they'd have survived as long if they were trying to be good.

The only reason the word nigger is in the book is because that was the vernacular of the time. I just read The Thicket, which is set turn of the century in Eastern Texas. Nigger was on every 4th page. To me the books are more about navigating morality in settings where it is hard to find. Both novels wrestle more with issues that are common to humanity: violence's place in the world, survival, coming of age, etc.

Simpletons who are obsessed with "oooh he said the N word, this is the le heckin greatest book ever" are not the target audience. McCarthy's writing style is not accessible.

What is true of one man, said the judge, is true of many. The people who once lived here are called the Anasazi. The old ones. They quit these parts, routed by drought or disease or by wandering bands of marauders, quit these parts ages since and of them there is no memory. They are rumors and ghosts in this land and they are much revered. The tools, the art, the building? These things stand in judgement on the latter races. Yet there is nothing for them to grapple with. The old ones are gone like phantoms and the savages wander these canyons to the sound of an ancient laughter. In their crude huts they crouch in darkness and listen to the fear seeping out of the rock. All progressions from a higher to a lower order are marked by ruins and mystery and a residue of nameless rage. So. Here are the dead fathers. Their spirit is entombed in the stone. It lies upon the land with the same weight and the same ubiquity. For whoever makes a shelter of reeds and hides has joined his spirit to the common destiny of creatures and he will subside back into the primal mud with scarcely a cry. But who builds in stone seeks to alter the structure of the universe and so it was with these masons however primitive their works may seem to us.

Each and every sentence is perfect. The narrative perfectly captures the lurid violence and beauty of existence. The characters are compelling and distinct despite their starkness. The setting is the perfect backdrop to illustrate the nature of man vs nature, since the American West was truly primal yet connected to modernity.

There are beautiful depictions of the vast and varied landscape of North America, as well as nauseating depictions of brutal violence. There's a human compulsion to exist alongside a human compulsion to destroy. There's the audacious act of survival as well as the altogether lethal reality of existence. There are passages that make your stomach churn, and passages that make you appreciate being alive.

Yeah, it says nigger a bunch. A lot of dudes get their shit chopped and blasted. But it's like the Sopranos. There's two levels of fans. The retards who clap and bay for violence and titties, and the others who get that the whole thing was about being alive in a dying civilization.

The Judge's arguments are classic amorality combined with painting humanity as a totalitarian force that conquers nature. It's just a self-hating interpretation of Humans that wouldn't be out of place in James Cameron's Avatar.
The reality is that Humanity is a net positive for the world, progress is possible, and "the Judge" himself can only operate when he is surrounded by weak men who allow themselves to be cowed by his bullshit - see any era of despotism. The minute intelligent moral people start working together, faggots like the Judge get hung from a tree.

Negative portrayal of Mexicans and Indians. It has a lot of scenes of Native Americans doing fucked up shit and that pissed people off back when the book came out. The point isn't that they are evil, as the gang do the same shit, it was that people romanticize a lot of cultures and disregard factual fucked up shit they did and this book didn't sugar coat or hide that Natives weren't saints like people try to portray them all the time.

That shit alone is why this would be a challenge to ever get made.

The black reared his head at the sight of the lubricious form of the judge's pale phallus serpentine it wandered gazing out into the world as an infant unborn and yet undesired brought into the world cold and pale and unbreathing. Its pillaric form shone brightly in the void the pillar stood mute upon the black promontory a monolith wrought in obscene geometry. The Judge took to a foul chimeric cacophany of grunting as his member penetrated serene the fistula of the niggers anus dark and unmoving in that sea of serpentine parades the Judge set to stirring up the very soul and the thrice uncottered dreams of the buck were fetched as if a pulque upon the sunborn indigo infant of the world yet unawakened in this land or any other. His breaking came forth as if unbidden into that old night the shadows long and gristled as each thrust was delivered ungouged and unrequited it's eldritch desire can be found buried deep within the hearts of men. As some titan cherubim this pale form let out a cry in the tongues not of man or beast but like to an infernal register unheard in this world since that brought forth tears from the eyes of the watchers and were rendered as stars that danced like naked pygmies upon the bastion of Babylon. The watchers members taken also in hand at their opportunity to arrive unbidden into the bastion of that forsaken womb to bring forth not a child of god but a buck rendered broken upon the firmament which would render the dreams of that infernal race delivered asunder unto the world, writhing and unformed but yet natural in the land that conjured it.

The end is clear. The Kid embraces The Judges ideology and the “Judge” lives eternal.
>He says that he will never die.

After the encounter in the desert, where the Judge intentionally shoots the Kids reflection and speaks only words for him to hear, the kid spends the rest of his life wandering the US seeking something, seeking himself, seeking his reflection. He finally meets the Judge again, in a bar where a haze so thick mutes any persons reflection in the mirror. Now, whether or not the Kid kills the girl, or just accepts the Judges morality, is irrelevant. It’s clear that he is embraced in the flesh of the Judge, as in he has become one with the judge, and the “judge” will live forever.

It's unfilmable because what makes the novel great is hard to capture on film. How do you convey the layers of meaning, literary references and prose that fucks with the reader in multiple ways in cinematography? So much of the book is referential and built on the readers experience. How do you even begin to translate what makes the book great into film? It's not Stephen King, the actual events that happen aren't the only point.

Gore isn't an issue.

>What makes Blood Meridian unfilmable?

There are no John Fords to make the landscape photography a character itself. It has to be Apocalypse Now inna desert mountains with blackpowder 'gun play', requiring a Marlon Brando Col. Kurtz performance carrying the entire length of the film. The kinds of actors required to cast it right (Mel Gibson, Glanton) are too expensive or aging out (like Vincent D'Onofrio for Judge Holden). The political climate will ensure it's received in bad faith critically as an (agit)prop to declaim variations on the Kill Whitey champagne slacktivist theme. The stunt choreography has to be the opening Indian raid of The Revenant the entire time. And there has to be the subtly to leave it open to interpretation. And the Directors working all only have one element required (Eggers' period pieces, McDonaugh's political allegory and nature shots in Banshees of Inishirin, Von Trier understanding the mission with the America Trilogy, but refuses to fly and is an alcoholic wreck.)

The time for it to have been done would have been late 70s to late 80s, early 90s at the Blockbuster latest. It's an immense liability, and invariably only inadequate director talent will take it on out of naivete. An indirect adaptation in Japan or Eastern Europe in some 30 Years War setting would have to break the ground for a proper Anglophone one.

Killed a man propositioning him as a rent boy outside the bar out on the coast. Killed the calumnizing punkass bone picker brother out on the prairie right before the final Judge meeting. Other men are lustfully seeking the Dancing Bear girl, now unemployed and set to immenently become a prostitute-- my money's on the redemptive lens on all his past deeds with the gang being preparation to take a life, delivering frontier mercy, given what comes immediately after in the epilogue.
