Why is there a new prequel/spin off/sequel every time I turn around?

The prequelasted for one season but was cancelled. The "spinoffs" so far are just straightforward continuations. New Blood could kinda sorta be considered more of a spinoff due to the different style and different dynamic of having his headpartner be Deb instead of Harry, nevertheless it's still just a straight followup to Dexter.

The reason New Blood didn't just continue is because the setting changed to NYC so they launched Resurrection to separate them.
