Acute-on-chronic liver failure is very hard to reverse. Supportive care can sometimes stabilize a person, but if the liver was already severely damaged, his chances would have been much lower unless he was a candidate for transplant which I cant imagine he was or they could have done in his state.
Alcohol poisoning though they can just manage with fluids and IVs. If it's treated quickly, very much survivable.

His death is really depressing, obviously his lifestyle was fucked but there was a certain wholesomeness to the fact that he was completely genuine in an increasingly fake and gay world.
