People don’t understand that Starship Troopers is actually a satire on fascism.

Fascist Italy tried to look tough by draining swamps and launching a militarized campaign against mosquitoes. Posters literally showed soldiers fighting mosquitoes, because Mussolini needed “victories” wherever he could find them. Italy was too pathetic to win real wars (they got humiliated in Ethiopia and had to be bailed out by Hitler in WWII), so the regime staged a fake one against bugs. The joke is that fascism always needs an enemy, even insects, because the spectacle of extermination matters more than actual victory.

I know this is bait but Starship Troopers movie is extremely vague. All people have is:

This situation has nothing to do with Starship Troopers and everything to do with people on social media battling to feel cleverer than other people. It is a meta conversation. The simply fact of the matter is, people use media analysis selectively. Some people agree with death of the author, the idea that authorial intent is not the most important way of looking at a work, when it suits them. Other times they declare authorial intent as being the only thing that matters. And it completely depends on the context. When they want to feel clever over one person they might add an interpretation that was not intended by a piece of media and then turn around in a different piece of media and decry people's lack of understanding because those people interpreted it differently. This has nothing to do with actual media literacy, understanding or analysis and everything to do with fleeting battles or momentary feelings of superiority that people trick themselves into.

when I screeched about media literacy I was obviously poking fun at people.
in my serious opinion the idea of media literacy in general is dumb af. it is a robotic/non-human way of looking at media and peoples interactions with it.
people are diverse they have different experiences, values, beliefs from one another. to expect all the audience to interpret stories exactly as the author intends is unrealistic and ridiculous. it is a misunderstanding of the human mind.
some will say

but that's not the type of things people "misread". people interpret differently the opinions of the author. Like this person is bad, this is ugly, this is stupid, this is evil.
that the authors pass off as objective undeniable proven fact. but it's not, it is an opinion, a belief.
depending on the specific individuals experiences and values what is ugly to the author can be beautiful to them, what is stupid to the author can be interesting and captivating, what is evil to the author can be necessary, reaction to a greater evil or good even.
"media literacy" is an attempt to curb and control the narratives in the media. it's much more than just people wanting to feel smarter.
