I liked how the Saiyan saga made the universe feel enormous, uncaring and terrifying. Every planet was a barren shithole filled with horrors and Saiyans would routinely genocide races for profit. Even Namek was kind of shitty and it was considered relatively lush, so Earth felt like an incredibly fragile jewel to protect.
Early Saiyan/Namek saga really had a unique feel to it that it didn't recapture. As soon as androids became a thing that feeling was over unfortunately.

I always liked how the Z fighters were kind of in their own world divorced from the regular humans on Earth. It wasn't just the fact that they all lived away from civilization, it was like they were attuned to the mysticism of martial arts. All the humans in DB are always shown in their loud, bustling cities where there's always a burglary or people murdering each other or just being rude in general and were oblivious to everything. It's weird because you'd think the show would portray humanity as kind and worth protecting. That's another thing I like about DBZ. The Z fighters aren't super heroes, they just like fighting strong opponents. The show became less comfy when the Cell games was broadcasted to the entire world and became a world-changing event that would be brought up again regularly in the show from that point on. Even though I liked the Great Saiyaman stuff, I didn't like that the show pushed the implication of the Z fighters being celebrities known across the world. Even the announcer remembering Goku felt like a weird piece of continuity, when DBZ honestly didn't have much continuity. Though I guess the whole point of Mr. Satan is to make fun of that very idea of the Z fighters actually being acknowledged for their feats.

I watched DBZ as a kid and didn't watch DB until I was much older. It was after rewatching DBZ on a nostalgia kick.
I can unequivocally say that DB was the soul element of both shows. The only soulful moments in DBZ were thanks to what DB had already established in terms of theme and tone.
However, DBZ is more kino. In fact, when it comes to DB and DBZ, soul and kino are inversely correlated. DB got kino by the end, but at the cost of its soul. And the further DBZ progressed, the less soul it had. By the end of DBZ, it was all kino and no soul. Personally, I prefer the early to mid DBZ sagas as they had the optimal balance of kino to soul.

As someone that watched DBZ as a kid, and tried watching it again, the pacing is not some "oh it adds levity, more character development, world building". It is genuinely worse and makes the experience of going through something like the Frieza Saga excrutiating. You literally watch 3 episodes from Goku chopping up Frieza with his own attack to finally dealing the finishing blow. It is ridiculous and the only way you can be okay with the pacing is if you only watched it as a kid, haven't rewatched it and has nostalgia goggles on and/or are retarded. It was a slog getting through the Frieza Saga and went I switched to Kai for the Cell Saga, I damn near finished it in a week when the Frieza Saga took me a month cause I could only stomach 1-2 episodes a day.

Also, on Nyaa there are multiple torrents. One of the best is a 1tb for DBZ that has all the audios from all the dubs and japanese broadcasts, all the scores and none of this bullshit AI upscaling that some groups love to use for older animes. Same as Kai, you just have to know where to look.

DBZ has multiple english dubs. They all vary in significant ways from voice acting to dialogue. There are comparison videos on youtube where you can see scenes in saban, ocean, funimation dubs. The dialogue/writing is better, however, some of the voice acting in Kai is lacking. That's the difference. Believe me, I was a whole hater of Kai all the way from its announcement back in the day. Hating it for almost 2 decades just from chatter online till I finally watched it this year when I wanted to rewatch DBZ. The hate for it was incredibly forced and it is superior to Z in enough ways that it makes up for some of the stuff that DBZ might shine in. You can keep your nostalgia goggles on, and enjoy the inferior pacing and writing. I'll gladly take those being better in Kai, for what amounts to, like a dozen scenes that are better in Z.

It's the other way around. Most of the dialogue feels a lot more natural and has more impact in regular z than in kai, but the acting in Z ranges from great to dogshit, whereas the acting in kai is mostly great with a few misses. In kai it's like Vegeta is speaking as if he's just met these people for the first time and has to give a brief rundown of his entire arc, whereas in Z you can understand where Vegeta is coming from with everything he says because you've watched the show up until that point and his back story doesn't need to be retread, he's just having an outburst in a very natural sounding way.

The first 3 sagas needed a rewrite and redub. But Buu didn't since it was done after Funimation found its legs and became competent. Most of its script changes were worse because it came a few years later than the other sagas after the big push from autistic purists beating the drum over >MUH LOCALIZATION, so they made a pretty faithful 1:1 dub from a source language that is wooden and emotionless and hard to translate. Majin Vegeta's dialog in the original Funi Buu saga is the best in the series entirely because it was rewritten and expanded upon and adapted for a better language.

The original Funimation dub is basically adapted to be more in line with American action cartoons. Characters trash talk/quip, are altered to fall more in line with capeshit archetypes the music is synth rock instead of 60's budget Godzilla music etc. Kai (script wise) is the original DBZ but in English. Z has typical glacial weekly shonenshit pacing while Kai butchers up and Frankensteins the show to be more in line with the manga to varying degrees of success. Whatever sounds more appealing to you is what you'll like better.

The only thing about the Funimation dub is about 70 episodes in you go from the 2005 redub into a 2007 pseudo redub with a mix of 2002/2007 voice performances for the remainder of the Frieza saga. The Cell Saga is just the 2003 dub. Meaning everyone is very green and bad at acting now. It's as disgusting as it sounds.
