Just saw Shin Godzilla in a theater
What did I think of it?

This was a good opportunity to update some of the 90s tier CGI in it but I'm guessing they didn't bother.

My theater had one couple in it besides me. They snuggled the whole time and she laughed when the acting PM said his noodles got soggy.

I wish I had someone to snuggle and watch Godzilla movies with.

What was even the point of them rereleasing it in theaters?

You liked the 5 minute scene half way through where Godzilla destroyed the city with his purple lasers. Otherwise you were bored.

actually the cinematography in the talking scenes and the snappy pacing are very engaging
anno knows how to make anything interesting

Dunno, but I got to see it again on the big screen so I'm not complaining.

the cgi is fine for japan and for the budget
the visual directing is more important and the raw cg quality

So much is happening but very little of it is interesting. I can appreciate the realism of bouncing between conferences during a crisis, and just seeing the beurocracy in action. But all the fancy camera angles in the world arent going to make it interesting.

-1 had much better VFX they could have used this re-release as an opportunity to fix the most egregious ones.

it's meant to be a satire/critique of japanese politics, particularly their shit response to the Fukushima disaster
it's kino

The entire point was that none of that was actually interesting. In fact it was detrimental to the situation. They were so busy talking about doing something that nothing actually got done. Hence the point of the film, that all talk in the world wont fix a problem

Hype for the sequel.

Oh it isnt lost on me, i got all the parallels to the disaster and how things went from bad to worse from the quake to the subsequent typhoon, to the nuclear disaster and just the absurdity of the cabinet ministers questioning if they even had the legal authority to defend themselves from Godzilla becuase of the wording of the law, to the scene where the PM confidently announced it couldn't walk on land seconds before it does, and the USA just being all too eager to drop the third one. None of it saves the film, when Godzilla isnt on screen shit is mind-numbing.

The Death of Stalin does this much more successfully and without being so dull.

I watched the whole thing and when Hideaki Anno's name came up at the end as writer and director it all made sense.

I liked when the sexy amerijap girl said "YES!" all dramatically

the movie is admirable because every moment Godzilla isn't on screen, the movie is focused on the effect he's having on humanity
the entire movie, from start to finish, is focused on godzilla and what his presence is doing to the world and how they're dealing with it
every scene is also fast paced and directly moving towards some kind of goal, and the cinematography is master class
I don't know how anyone could find it boring if you're actually paying attention and have an appreciation for the actual art of cinema
