I was surprised how phenomenal Close Encounters looks even by today's standard. Such a well-made and visually striking movie that doesn't go overboard despite constantly having scenes that invite that kind of trouble. Vilmos Zsigmond (who didn't get a fucking sticky here!) obviously deserved his Oscar and every praise that came with it but I had no idea Laszlo Kovacs also contributed as an "Additional Director of Photography". No wonder as Zsigmond received the same billing as Spielberg or the main cast themselves at the start of the movie, while Kovacs' name can only be spotted during the closing credits as part of a bigger block.
How were they able to get him? He came freshly off Scorsese's "New York, New York" and had projects like "Easy Rider", "Five Easy Pieces" or "Paper Moon" below his belt already; all as Director of Photography. I guess his life-long friendship with Zsigmond that dates back to the old country must have played a major role. It still made me wonder who did what and who came up with this and that. I also remember Spielberg himself being credited with the "concept of visual tricks" or something similar while it was Douglas Trumbull who executed them. Maybe the relationship was similar between Zsigmond and Kovacs too.

I know Anon and I can assure you his opinion is indeed heavily researched and important. He's one of the main reasons I still come to this site!
