Musical movies thread. I'm watching REPO! next, then perhaps Sweeney Todd.

It's so tough because even the best musical movies are still shit compared to the musicals themselves.
Like I LOVE the Sweeney Todd movie, but the original cast still beats it handily.
It's almost kind of nice that Wicked was split into 2 movies so they have no excuse to cut anything.

Zydrate Anatomy was the only song I'd heard from the film before watching it and I thought that one was pretty good
Sadly after watching the film it seems like that's the ONLY decent song and the rest are complete garbage
Kind of ruined the movie for me even though the concept was pretty unique
You don't need every song to be a hit to make a good musical but they also shouldn't be so fucking bad that they actively degrade the quality of every scene

It was too much music. They didn't need to sing out every line. They could've chosen some crucial parts in the story and make them memorable musical numbers. I know it's supposed to be an opera, everyone sings all the time but you need superb voices (and great music) for it to work, not a bunch of average actors. Also, while I found the comic-style interesting the cinematography was also to unified and had to much of an "emo-vibe" to it; the dark moody green/blue colors became a bit tiring after a period and made too much of the plot mix and blend together.

Paris Hilton was at least solid (personally thought she was great). Her persona really fitted her character and gave it an deserving aura of plasticity.

It's a good dumb movie. I enjoy it. Idk what people are expecting, it's not a cinematic classic, it's a dumb musical about organ harvesting and it's fucking fun. Anthony head and paul sorvino are fantastic in it too. Maybe it's just because I saw it when I was really young

The problem with REPO! The genetic opera is the "opera" bit, and the fact that they hired a bunch of people who can't sing to star in it.

I like musicals but find operas with their constant sing talking annoying.

For me, it's Shock Treatment, Phantom of the Paradise, Little Shop, the list goes on… REPO isn't great but it's worth watching Paul Sorvino ham it up with Paris Hilton. "WHERE THE FUCK IS DAD, BROTHERSSS"
I finally watched Fosse's Cabaret and All That Jazz recently. Cabaret was great, especially that "…..so do I" scene.
ATJ however had me smiling and crying like a bitch those last ten minutes. So fucking good, bros… I've been thinking about it ever since.

Women love Repo though. When I was in highschool the entire online Repo fandom was chicks who wanted to fuck grave robber. It was so female that I didn't check out the musical myself until much later, where, as metalhead edge enjoyer, I found myself liking it and felt silly for waiting.

the jackman/crowe les miserables was pretty good

Tangential, perhaps, but I desperately need anons to commiserate with. Heathers comes back to NYC and they're doing the GAY West End version. This production sucks so much more ass with every single iteration. The off Broadway production at least had peak costuming and a perfect Winona Ryder as the lead. It was fun! But then West End comes and fucks with it, apologia tracks to not offend people, giving green heather unwarranted stage time and cutting the "racist" lines - cutting the funnest song - and generally pushing the edgy fun into a sort of twee positivity that seems to infect all musicals. It sucks!
