These movies were shown on TV pretty regularly and even with losing a bunch of jokes to translation the visual slapstick carries them through.

Eastern Euro countries only had a few tv channels well into the mid-2000s. Under communism it was literally one tv channel.
They could always say β€œDid you watch X last night?” And hear back β€œOmg yes it was so funny when he said Y” creating a shared cultural understanding
Tv stations were rerunning these old comedies all the time. They were also low-brow and easy to understand which appealed to people who identified as dumb simple people. If a movie like pic rel came out young generations or westerners wouldnt enjoy it because they want to be seen as intellectuals. Eastern Europeans would just be like β€œhaha he eat the beans and punched the guy”

Guy named Geraldo Rivera hosted a talkshow back in the 80s and 90s. Your typical "guest" was always somebody weird. Siamese twins, 80 year old guy impregnating an 18 year old, etc. So a transsexual Satan worshipper would be part of his normal clientele. Think Maury Povich or Jerry Springer. That sleazy type of talkshow.
