I literally randomly just watched this for the first time in years. Who the fuck is spying on me and posting these threads?
Why do people from Eastern Europe love these movies and Airplane!, Hot Shots, and the other parody movies of that era so much? Every Balkanite I've talked to about /tv/ loves those movies. From PHDs to motel housekeepers, they all love those stupid movies. Is it because they represented the opposite of Soviet repression?

Here is the actual answer.
These movies were shown on TV pretty regularly and even with losing a bunch of jokes to translation the visual slapstick carries them through.
>Is it because they represented the opposite of Soviet repression?
These movies got airtime late 1990s/early 2000s.
Don't overthink good comedy.

>This week he is being honored for his 1000th drug dealer killed - ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Lieutenant Frank Drebin of police squad.
>*applause*
>In all honesty the last two I backed over with my car, luckily they turned out to be drug dealers
>Blowing away a fleeing suspect with my .44 magnum used to mean everything to me. I enjoyed it - well, who wouldn't?
The dock bribe scene or Nordberg's death/floating chalk is pretty funny, but the completely nonchalant way they sometimes imply that Drebin is killing people left and right is pretty funny to me.

Eastern Euro countries only had a few tv channels well into the mid-2000s. Under communism it was literally one tv channel.
They could always say βDid you watch X last night?β And hear back βOmg yes it was so funny when he said Yβ creating a shared cultural understanding
Tv stations were rerunning these old comedies all the time. They were also low-brow and easy to understand which appealed to people who identified as dumb simple people. If a movie like pic rel came out young generations or westerners wouldnt enjoy it because they want to be seen as intellectuals. Eastern Europeans would just be like βhaha he eat the beans and punched the guyβ

Guy named Geraldo Rivera hosted a talkshow back in the 80s and 90s. Your typical "guest" was always somebody weird. Siamese twins, 80 year old guy impregnating an 18 year old, etc. So a transsexual Satan worshipper would be part of his normal clientele. Think Maury Povich or Jerry Springer. That sleazy type of talkshow.

Airplane was popular so one single flop show wasn't enough to derail their whole careers. Also they dumbed the humor down a bit for the movies so moron audiences would know what the jokes were. They're still good movies just not quite the bone-dry comedy perfection of the show.

The opening scene, with O.J. crawling through the boat. There is graffiti, the name Al Larson. It's the name of the main character in my wife's first published Novel.

Wrongfully Accused is another Leslie classic
The Scary Movie films are also great, but they have a slightly different tone I'd say. There's a great Leslie scene in 3, too.

Parody/spoof only works when you have a society/culture that takes themselves too seriously to spoof. Now that we're in a new age of faux, church-lady moralism, we're just on the cusp of a new era of kino parody.
