No, that was just your Nature.

OP's point is the wilderness with it's dangers is just a backdrop for a man's battle with his faith. He is in perilous situation where his existence is being threatened and he's unsure what to make out of it. Such situation makes a man question the nature of lot of things and try to come clean with his own beliefs, motives and values. Is he being tested by God? Did he put him in this scenario to help him discover true faith? Or to make him realize his own strength? Will God help him if he humbles himself down? Or it has nothing to do with religion but believing in his own self? Or that nature is governed by unwritten rules and suffering is not a punishment against the man but the original state of this world? And the list goes on. The wolves are just a physical manifestation of the life threatening danger that makes him reflect and potentially reach certain conclusions.
