We're 3/4 of the way through the year, I'm still thinking this will sweep the oscars. Primarily black cast, about black culture in the racist south, wypeepo bad allegories. It has all the checkboxes. Plus I can see how it'd be seen as a win to give the wins to a mass-appeal movie considering the waning popularity of the oscars and the prevailing sentiment that they only award flicks that no average person has ever heard of. Black panther being nominated sort of set the ground work for this and this being another Coogler film doesn't hurt either.

Sinners = 8/10

Sinners could easily be a movie within The Vampire Chronicles universe and ironically succeeds in capturing the pathos of the vampire where so many other adaptations have failed. And it does so by giving the vampire minimal but memorable scenes. It's like the Jurassic Park of vampire movies.

It's probably up there with Interview with the Vampire as one of the best vsmpire movies of all time. I'm going to watch Only Lovers Left Alive and Byzantium in the coming weeks months to contrast and compare.

I wasn't expecting it to be that good but it's pretty kino desu. The production values are really good and so is the music. It's got some great acting too. I felt like the film blew it's load at the end a bit too quickly but that's my only major complaint. I'm not sure if I would say it's film of the year material but I haven't really seen many films that came out this year and a lot of them were just capeslop and the like, so it could probably win out over the competition. I'd definitely recommend it to everyone in the thread, including those who don't like blacks.

It doesn't have 'Halloweeny' atmosphere per se but any horror movie set in the old south pretty much goes hand in hand with Halloween.

- has a depth of supernatural lore (not expounded but very cool) with ties to Ireland, birthplace of modern Halloween traditions

The first hour is amazing and virtually perfect as it sets up the party.

I actually like that part a lot. It was a bold choice.
It made sense with the idea that spiritual communion that connects you with your people past and present, and it was done with just the right amount of restraint for me that it didn't come across as hammy.
It's a common trope in many books and I've only seen it a handful of times in movies with other settings, but I thought it was done well.

On a related note, even though I thought Lovecraft Country was terrible especially the later episodes, the third episode with the housewarming party scene was done very well, very atmospheric, similar to the dance number scene here.

Also if you thought the movie was demonizing the Irish you've interpreted the movie wrong.

I wouldn't mind seeing a Silver John adaptation, though the post-Korean war setting throws me for a loop, I feel like it should be set much early, like maybe even 1800s America.
I wouldn't mind seeing a black, white-magic practicing balladeer protagonist encountering haints, vampires, and various cryptids in rural America.
