It simply means prioritizing other modes of transportation (bus/bike lanes, bigger sidewalks, car-free areas, public transportation) rather than building more highways and lanes. Also building businesses/homes closer to each other so shit like shopping and entertainment is within walking distance instead of having to drive 30 minutes to your nearest Walmart.

Places like Austin and Orlando have sidewalks yeah but you aren't going to walk or bike anywhere with how far everything is, they were specifically built for car travel

Land was cheap and plentiful when most American cities were being built so they went outwards rather than upwards.
Infrastructure was built accordingly.

When you reach a certain level of population density, walkable cities with effective public transportation are infinitely better to live in than the mess that is Houston. But it is more or less impossible for cities like that change at this point.

People always say NYC is too expensive, but I lived in NYC just fine on a $55k salary and went out to see live theater 2-3 times every single week, as well as movies every week as well. Did you know that in NYC there are over 100 different plays put on every single day, even if you went to see live theater every single day you still wouldn't be able to even come close to seeing them all. There are also over a dozen arthouse theaters that show movies you can't see anywhere else. Then of course there are great restaurants of any variety you could want. And its all within walking distance because of the mass transit. I didn't need a car at all.

I lived in an apartment I shared with 2 other roommates for $750 a month, and had a very small room to myself, but that was fine since I just treated it as a place to sleep or read. It was only a few blocks from the subway so I could be in midtown manhattan in under 30 minutes at any time of day.

Plus since you're a big nature guy you should know that in addition to our amazing city parks (central park obviously is famous, but in the Bronx there are huge forested parks accessible by the subway that let you get completely away from feeling like you're in the city) but if you want a for real state park you can camp in those are accessible by commuter trains that let you off within short walkidng distance from the trailhead. You sometimes see people on the trains with full backpacks going camping. Where else in the US but NYC is this true?

I've lived in "walkable" places, and places where I have to drive everywhere and I find there's no functional difference between a 10 min. drive and a 10 min. walk. What driving really gives you is more places to live within a certain commute time radius. If I had to walk to work, I'd have to live in the ghetto. It absolutely was not. First of all, Carmel isn't "bumfuck Indiana", it's probably the wealthiest suburb of Indianapolis. Second, nothing in your picture existed until recently; none of this land was developed much at all 20 years ago. Indianapolis paved an old railway called the Monon that runs all the way up through Carmel which is what you see here, and Carmel paid developers to come in and build out the "Art and Design District". If you pull the picture out you'll see upscale suburban developments as far as you can see.

Carmel's main claim to transit fame is replacing stop signs and signals with roundabouts.

The real answer as if anyone ITT actually cares is America's infrastructure is not conducive to you just walking anywhere you need to go. Its not a system that was born from convenience, our mindset has been "do whatever the fuck you want, when you want". The car affords that luxury. I dont have to wait 20 mins for the next bus or train and have to walk 5 mins to the platform and 5 more away to get to my destination. I just get in my car and go direct. Theres a big time advantage and freedom inherent to this system. We like everyone having their own property, this requires land which in turn spaces everything out.

If you want to change how we do things and make more walkable cities fine, do that. Good luck changing the collectivr american mindset away from comfy suburb life into everyone-must-pack-into-city though. I have no idea why you guys want to act like people are going to stop you from driving cars that are miserable to drive in anyway. I just think it would be nice to have different and possibly more affordable and efficient options. Course I think American towns of the future should be combination of a mall/apartment complex with underground parking decks and a all that lawn space is used a public park and camping/hunting ground. The center is all historical buildings with plenty of shops and offices, right outside the center there are some more modern 60s-80s flats and villas and then outside of that there's the industrial zone. Takes me 5 minutes by car to go to work and 4 minutes by foot to take a nice Campari after work in the town center

I drive through Carmel all the time. It's "bikeable" because there is one big strip going down the middle of it that has designated bike paths in the middle, with a few off-road trails scattered around. Driving through the city is great because of this because you rarely see any of the cyclists due to them staying in the designated areas.

The road in the pic is shit to drive through, though. Not because of cyclists, because it's an area with a lot of outdoor attractions and people are constantly walking across. But you don't typically drive through there unless you're looking for a parking spot to join the walking people.
