Early concepts of Prometheus seem to be heavily inspired (ripped off) from the famously scrapped Jodorowsky's Dune.

if that was true, it would actually make a ton of sense why the engineer went apeshit when he woke up and saw an a.i. standing in front of him. They violated the butlerian jihad by creating a thinking machine, rather than genetically designing a living computer.

The script is specifically designed around Weyland hiring dumbasses to fill positions he only needs to placate a boardroom. There's enough left over in the film to surmise this but the script is much more in depth about it and doesn't even turn Weyland into a twist.
