Superman 2025 is one of the worst superhero movies of all times. James Gunn, who excels in directing overdone violence, out of place quips, undeserved melodrama and perverted sex obsession brings all his trademark traits to this rendition of Superman. This isn't a Superman movie, it's a Marvel/Guardians of Galaxy movie with Superman in the middle of it. In fact, Gunn seems to enjoy writing Justice Gang far more than he does writing Superman. The former which ran off two jokes that were repeated ad nauseam throughout the movie.
What makes Superman a compelling character is gone in Gunn's sloppy adaption. He's not particularly strong, he's not particularly wise, he's a poor leader, he's extremely narcissist and gets easily emotional. And this is supposed to be a seasoned Superman. It's almost like Gunn was projecting his own shitty flawed character on to Superman. The only missing touch would be if Lois was a minor.
The action scenes are just a complete mess of CG blob. Superman is basically a rag doll that gets thrown all over the place and nothing in this movie has weight or meaning to it, particularly in its action. There's a scene where Lois and Mr Terrific break into enemy HQ and the whole ordeal is of course settled with a very catchy music montage of all the enemies being dismantled with utter ease. The next scene is of Clark trying to keep a CGI baby from drowning in lava with his deus ex dog arriving in timely manner to save him again. This is straight out of a Marvel movie and has no place in a Superman movie.
This rendition of Lex is also his most shallow depiction. There is no nuance or intelligence to this Lex. He's not particularly shrewd and constantly spills out his plans for everyone to find out. He throws into temper tantrums just like Superman and starts to sob and cry because Superman is better than him. Where is the elegance and intelligence of Luthor? This is basically a spoiled rich kid battling another spoiled strong kid. 1/10, MCU slop.

Superman 2025 is one of the better superhero movies. James Gunn, who excels directing comic book silliness, self-aware comedy, heartfelt theatricality and eccentric romance brings all his trademarks to this rendition of Superman. In fact, Gunn seems to enjoy writing a comic book extravaganza, with all the complementary crossovers these stories are famous for, a style which is commonly littered with good-natured jokes.
What makes Superman a compelling character is glorified in Gunn's sharp adaptation. He's particularly strong, passionately wise, a respectful leader, and refreshingly vulnerable. An alien who isn’t afraid to tap into emotion. This is supposed to be classic Superman, where Gunn mirrors his own humble optimism into a character that has always reflected back such positivity.
The action scenes aren’t just a complete mess of CG. Superman is essentially a super human that has to face enemies of merit, the biggest being an exact clone of himself, and his struggle has weighted meaning to it. There's a scene where Mr Terrific breaks into enemy HQ and the whole ordeal is of course settled. But these are all human enemies being dismantled with utter ease. The next scene is of Superman trying to keep a baby from drowning in lava with his famous superdog arriving in a timely manner to try to help. Of course, Superman easily defeats his human opponents, but a black hole? He has to be creative to save Krypto and a baby.
This is rising action straight out of a comic, and demonstrates Gunn’s attention to the source material.
This rendition of Lex is also his most layered depiction, with nuance and intelligence. He's particularly shrewd and continually masks his true plans. He throws temper tantrums just like his comic counterpart, and cries because Superman is better than him. This is the faux elegance of Luthor which crumbles when he is defeated. This is basically a spoiled rich kid battling a strong kid. After all, it’s capeshit.
10/10, capeslop.

I’ve been a Superman and Batman fan since I was a kid. I have all Golden Age archives of both. Along with tons others. I stopped reading comics as teen so have no ideas what the fuck is going on after millionth crisis. What I can tell you is Man of Murder was not Superman. Even Golden Age Superman at most ruthless only punished corrupt politicians and crooks and always protected the innocent. Not make out with Lois with mass death around him. Obviously you have no idea about Superman if don’t think he’s ever struggled or got beaten by villains

>reboot from franchise that was popular but hated by online critics and fanboys/soiboys
>release to forced shill narrative of how it's so much better than the prior movies (because it has less problematic elements, ie masculinity)
>movie is a financial bomb, the general audience doesn't care because they removed the elements they found previously appealing
>online soiboys damage control by blaming it all on the prior movies and claiming that surely the sequels will do much better now that its "reputation" has been saved
>makes the franchise fade to irrelevancy and the studio loses millions of dollars
What's this phenomenon called?

This is the thing that I've noticed so far... James Gunn making political statements and applying them to the movie seems to be constructed entirely as a PR thing and doesn't really seem connected to anything the movie is saying. That goes in hand with the usual suspects who will take that political message and eat it up and apply it to the movie even though it doesn't actually have a connection. It really wasn't very woke or anything in that vein, Superman parents literally sent him there invincible style to take over the world, but he happens to be a nice guy and would rather be a nice guy despite that fact. And a whole lot of liberal basement dwellers are going to spin that into some kind of political statement while using that stupid punk rock song from the end that is already getting fucking old and running it into the ground With imaginary messages. I am sure that is why JG did it in the first place. Which given the current tone of the culture seems to be a pretty personal move on his part, I feel lthe people financing the production would probably rather have him just keep his mouth shut. Again it didn't end up meaning very much in the first place because the movie really doesn't have any connection to any of those political themes that were mentioned.

But as bad as this was, Fantastic 4 looked so much worse I didn't dare watch it.

I honestly think Gunn got too personal with this movie. The dog was stupid, actually bad. It could have been executed better, but it's still an inherently dangerous super dog that randomly mauls people and yet Superman just leaves it everywhere. Then I found out Gunn adopted a dog just as he was writing the script.
I felt it was the second weakest part of the movie, after massive Israel plot line (which on seeing the full context is clearly an Israel reference)
