>go in expected a gritty character drama that deeply explores the mind of a mob boss and those around him
>instead get one of the funniest sitcoms ever created with occasional moments of in-depth character study
Not even complaining
What are some other shows you went into expecting it to be something it wasnt?

Dexter. Went in expecting CSI with a serial killer. Got a campy serial killer with a heart of gold with a semi noir feel to it.

Breaking Bad
Expected a gritty show about a teacher joining the world of drugs and crime and how he slowly loses his sanity
Instead i got the wacky adventures of some middle-aged man and his stoner sidekick

That’s accurate for season 1 in particular. After that you get what you were expecting

I found it easier to enjoy TV shows by just expecting them to be campy fun shit instead of deep and serious drama

went in expecting a serious, dark murder mystery, maybe something like a small-town film noir.
instead got a surreal soap opera parody with bizarre humor, supernatural horror, and an FBI agent obsessed with damn good coffee.

I went into Jojos Bizarre Adventure expecting it to be the insanity of something like Baki. Instead it’s a pretty standard shonen that excels at showing comradery and battles that are moreso about brains over brawn

This
Breaking Bad season 1 is basically a comedy, yet nothing in BCS felt like it, save for occasional moments like the stuff with Pryce. Not a complaint on the show, it was just unexpected to see the comic relief character not be played up for comedy

I think the big reason The Sopranos works so well is that it strips away veneer of the cunning criminal mastermind that the Tony Soprano WANTS (You) to think he is and shows him to be a wildly insecure petty little man with crippling family problems. This is in turn

>makes him more relatable to the average viewer
>creates opportunities for accidental comedy that otherwise would be considered inappropriate for the genre
>ultimately shows his way of life to be as shallow and devoid of meaning as working any other dead-end job

Since a lot of people are attracted to a life of crime by the mystique and promises of wealth, humorously showing how even when you achieve that, it won't save you from that nagging mother you can't stand, is actually more effective at deterring people from that lifestyle than traditional drama.

A lot of the shows produced by HBO. I remember The Wire getting all this critical acclaim and thinking it was this must watch show. It was boring and a lot of the plots were just lifted from real events or in one case from the song Killah Hills 10304 by the Wu Tang Clan. I was expecting The Wire to be the greatest police procedural ever, but all it did was add the villains perspective and it was shit like we dindu nuffin we had to sell crack to survive. Or, I'm a complete buttfucking homosexual who doubles as a moral vigilante. I only kill the badguys. Ya chud homosexuals are morally upright!
