The look on Bishop's face when his hopes and dreams are ripped away when Ripley suicides is worth the price of admission alone. It's a mid movie on its own, but caps off the story perfectly.

The problem with the movie is that Ripley shouldn't have been in it. It would've been a great Alien movie if it wasn't Alien 3, but maybe just a standalone movie in the Alien universe or a spinoff. Maybe a colonist or a family of colonists had escaped LV-426 before the events of Aliens and they were infected and landed/crashed on Fiorina.

But Alien 3 being a direct sequel shat all over the events and cast of the predecessor and followed a nonsensical series of coincidences to make it work.

The actual meat of Alien 3 worked. The claustrophobic prison planet with no way in or out, no weapons, and the alien hunting them all down. It just shouldn't have been a Ripley movie.

the solution is easy too. Just have Newt and Hick's pods damaged in a such way that they have to wait for the relief party to safely revive them. That way in the climax the alien can threaten Newt's pod and Ripley can sacrifice herself to save her.

Even better it allows you to segway into recast adult Newt in the next film so you keep the female action star.

For all his faults, Blomkamp had the best idea for the Alien franchise in decades. Retcon that piece of shit third movie that crashed the story into a brick wall for no reason. Reset the timeline back to when fans enjoyed the movies and set it a few years later. There's still plenty of room for awesome stories there and they don't have to be fucking stupid ass nonsensical prequels anymore. It didn't need Ripley either but whatever.

It doesn't work though. They throw away all the science fiction of the previous films and make it boring. There is no interesting environment, no cool equipment or vehicles or even weapons to fight the threat. It's boring and reeks of low budget. I gotta be honest my dad isn't an arbiter of taste in any way, he generally likes all sequels to things he already likes. I think he's a good indicator of the general public though, it's a decent movie for your average watcher.

I liked it. In retrospect I think killing off Newt from the second movie was a mistake and retroactively made that movie have less impact when you watch the third movie, but overall I think a sci-fi prison was an interesting setting for the franchise and I enjoyed it adding things like the aliens being able to make variations on other species than humans and also showing us the face of the corporation but as a human and dislikable version of the likable android we had gotten to know.

The film shows the "super face hugger" aka "royal face hugger" in the version with the ox.
It has webbed fingers and carapace, this is a facehugger that plants a queen egg and can hug multiple times, implanting a queen and a drone.
But you're already dismissing this as "contrived" instead of the new quirk that the lore has accepted and multiple comics have used as a feature.

So the simple connection of all this is;
The queen laid a premature emergency egg in a corner somewhere in the sulaco while in transit. The egg developed while the team were in hypersleep, it got into Ripley's pod and laid the queen egg first; then got cut when getting into Newt's pod and the acid set off the alarm, ejecting the eev.
The facehugger couldn't get to newt so when the pod crashed it hid and settled for an ox when it could.
