Some hebrews (I'd think rightfully so) complained that running around in the desert isn't that much fun so god struck them with the plague.
Then there was the issue with the bull they worshipped. Just imagine: Your leader decides to leave and in the meantime, you chose to worship an effigy because it's not written that it's wrong and god (the same guy who gives you the plague if you don't like sand) does nothing.
