The point of this kind of character/story isn't to emulate him but to recognize that you can be happy with having practically nothing and to start appreciating the things you have.

I really liked this movie but I think it was ultimately about cope.
The cleaning job, the fixed routing, rejecting of modern technology. It seets life on autopilot. You see him opening up when he meets his niece and really stressed when his coworker quits his job, leading to him skipping his weekend routine and smoking and drinking instead.
The ending when he starts crying settles this.
I really like that simple way of life, but it is missing some important pieces.
And I'm pretty damn sure that cleaning toilets literally anywhere is a shitty job.
