I really liked this movie but I think it was ultimately about cope.
The cleaning job, the fixed routing, rejecting of modern technology. It seets life on autopilot. You see him opening up when he meets his niece and really stressed when his coworker quits his job, leading to him skipping his weekend routine and smoking and drinking instead.
The ending when he starts crying settles this.
I really like that simple way of life, but it is missing some important pieces.
And I'm pretty damn sure that cleaning toilets literally anywhere is a shitty job.

Actually yes. Realistically the more truthful we are to people about the realities of life the better received films would be. If we keep preaching some Disney-eqsue romanticizing view of life and not the brutal realities of it and how some people don't make it out alive - as proven by America and Japan's suicide rates - we keep fostering a generation of golems bent on believing the system is jsut fine the way it is and war isn't needed to fix it.

Life and suffering are the same thing. Once you understand that, a lot of fear and depression goes away.
>>213968499
Because sometimes when things are miserable in your life, you don't just find joy in cleaning toilets or watching grass grow, you kill yourself or you strive to fix it, depicting someone who does neither but is still happy about it is romanticizing the misery of life. I've met people like Hiryama, and most of them are either drug addicts, alcoholics, or medically ill in some way they know they are going to die soon so they don't care anymore. That's reality.
>>213968794
I argue that the problem lies in people thinking that suffering is separate from the life experience instead of a integral part of it. In avoiding and denying suffering a man creates cognitive dissonance that doesn't allow him to fully relax. In thinking that there's some sort of cosmic injustice that he has to experience suffering he makes himself spiteful and envious.
You only truly "get it" when you fully accept that the ups and downs are both equally part of life.

There is no such thing as a virtuous life. That's the problem, this film inherently tries to define it as just be happy and content with what you got! That's not virtuous, that's ignorance. The only way life becomes tolerable is when we as a society bring back empathy and understanding to others in that situation and give them a platform to speak or create without fear of being marginalized or censored.

cope. many people live in poverty and not-technically-slavery. having even a citizenship in a first world country already puts you into the global aristocracy. finding happiness despite a shit life isn't impossible (or so i heard) but you must be delusional to think that there aren't people who get pumped full of natural, home-grown happy chemicals simply for doing what feels natural to them and being at the right place at the right time. they don't have to self improove or accept the suffering of life as long as they stay humble and not get too decadent

The depressed man wants to make everything about himself and his emotional state. With an entire world and 10 billion other people in the world choosing to sit in a room and rot is narcissism. He is staking a claim that he is the most important thing and only he matters. The positively expressed narcissist tries to make everything about himself but chooses to express it in self-aggrandizement and seeking praise/status.
>what does it have to do with "misery loves company"?
A miserable narcissist will hate the fact that other people are happy and will seek not to pull himself up to their level, but to pull others down to his. "If I can't have it than neither can you, because I am the most important thing."

If you're going through a rough patch, it's natural to feel sad and one meal isn't going to do shit, but you don't have to hate every second of waking life or think it's "unfair", that's stupid. Now, if you're depressed, you should get help.

Like I said, nothing wrong with taking these entry level jobs when you're young and are studying or working on perfecting other skills or just want some cash. Now, if you're past 25 and haven't even attempted to make something of yourself, and think "this is it", then it's over for you.

You feel the constant urge to challenge and change yourself because you are not comfortable with yourself. You externalize your problems into practical goals to give yourself a false sense of power of your feelings. When you achieve the external goals you strive for, you will feel empty.
I spent my 20's and half my 30's with your mindset and eventually realized how retarded it all is. I quit my job and bought a small house on a big plot of land. I spend most my days lounging around and reading and have never been more fulfilled.

Wasn't it implied that he was once rich and sucessful? I could have sworn his sister hinted at his "new life" when they spoke.
I thought he quit his job and started living like a poor pleb in order to enjoy the small things and a simple life.

It's not logical. It's emotional. It's not positive or healthy but the narcissist gets to make everything about himself, and that's what is driving the behavior.

i'm suspect of this type of discourse around narcissists. it seems to often come from people who seem like they want nothing but to rationalize shitting on people they don't like.

It's a beautiful movie but some of the moments hit really hard, especially if you're a 45 year old boomer like me and can actually relate to the guy.
