No. All it did was inspire teens with cheap Japanese cars as their first cars into thinking that they could own a "serious street machine."

>>213965632
I remember that. It was funny.

>>213965717
Japanese cars are high-geared for top speed, so all of their torque power is at the high end of the RPM gauge. American muscle cars are low-geared like trucks are, so all of their torque power is at the low side of the RPM gauge. So they launch better because of it. They don't have to wait to get up in speed before the car's power kicks in because that power is right there at launch. The advantage of the Japanese cars is power-to-weight ratios as well as better suspension.

They designed ricers around power-to-weight ratios like Porsche used to. 300 horsepower pushes a light car faster than it does a heavy car. The flaw is most of the time the engines were very small, so they could do that power, but due to the displacement they had no real torque, so they had no real balls to their driving. They didn't kick you in the chest and make you feel like you got shot out of a cannon like a big-block high-torque muscle car does.

>most american cars at the time.
That's the flaw. American cars at the time had no power due to 1970s over-regulation still in effect. The only good American muscle car of the 80s is the Buick GNX, and it took a lot of Mclaren British engineering to make it right after Chevy fucked Buick by limiting it to a V-6 so only the Chevy Monte Carlo version of that platform body has a V-8 in it.

>Japanese cars are high.geared for top speed
All Japanese market cars are electronically limited to 180 km/h due to government regulations, why would they gear them for top speed if they literally can't go that fast?

>so all of their torque power is at the high end of the RPM gauge
Torque and power are different things. The gearbox has nothing to do with your 'RPM gauge' or your engine's powerband. American muscle cars tend to have flat powerbands because (especially circa 2001) they were mostly highly undersquare V8s with two-valve heads - they made lots of torque thanks to a long stroke but they literally couldn't rev that much due to friction and inertia. Contrast it with '90s Hondas and their oversquare engines with sky-high redlines and fancy four-valve variable timing heads. That's got nothing to do with gearing, if anything it was Japanese cars that tended to have shorter gears. Power-to-mass ratios also tended to be similar if you compared like for like, an LT1 Corvette had about the same hp/ton as a twin turbo Supra despite being much cheaper when new.
