Not true. Season 5 and 6 could have been the treasure island story and then 7+ could have been the adventures one might expect after treasure island. Limitless potential. They could have even brought the characters to the future and had sci-fi adventures.

It never got GoT numbers because it was on starz, but it was still incredibly popular (rightly so)

Same thing happened to MItHC. Suddenly in the (as it turns out, always,) final season it was all about some nigg revolutionary group that you didn't even hear about in the first three seasons. They always just hamfistedly shoehorned "Diversity™" plots, which ended up killing the shows.

It had 4 seasons and stopped before overstaying it´s welcome. That´s pretty solid even if the last season was weaker than the rest.

Now that the dust has settled we can say for sure that was the correct approach. Even if one doesn´t like the ending all that much it is still way better than how GoT, Westworld and Vikings ended. Just take the win.

Not even the same thing. This shit ass episode, the gay plot was the ENTIRE episode and had nothing to do with the rest of the season. At least Flints, love triangle had a point and added massive backstory to the 3 characters and it didn't take up an entire episode.

It started out fine but got increasingly stupid as it went on.
The first couple seasons positioned themselves as 'what you think you know about pop culture pirates is nonsense'. The back half of the series was 'actually pirates are just like our modern ethnically diverse downtown San Fransisco of today'.
