BAD AUDIO ON BLURAY
sometimes i'll watch an old movie and say, wow, the sound is really bad, how did people tolerate that?

well it turns out the sound was just fine back in the day and the problem is new audio engineers doing the digital equivalent of DNR to all of the old audio.

just listen for yourself, see this comparison for Citizen Kane. what do you think sounds better, the crappy VHS or the brand new Criterion bluray?

i dont understand who does this, and why, and how we can stop them from making old movies sound worse than they already do. no one even knows about this, this guys blog is the only one i can find talking about it

You need DRC (Dynamic Range Control) if you are watching at night on a sound system and don't want to wake people up. Plus Midnight Mode.

I didn't know Lando Calrissian had bad audio.

Because the bugmen who work on the audio think that everyone has the same $2000 speaker 10.1 setup as them with the latest bugmen features and a soundproof room. They don't account for the majority of people who are just watching on their tv in the middle of the day.

Audiophiles are locusts who will not rest until society is destroyed

Anything more high tech than a stereo amp and phono cables and you're part of the problem

Dolby/DTS/SDDS don't allow theatrical mixes produced through their systems to be made available for home video release. It's why Atmos/DTS:X are completely neutered when it comes to available objects on 4K releases.

Picrel shows that part of the problem is laziness/greed. They'll keep reusing the first digital version, no matter how bad, rather than going back to the master and doing the best they can with that. The first digital version was probably automatically pumped out with no oversight on standard settings just to get a DVD on the shelf.
>who does this
Audio engineers who are told/think that everything must be "clean"
>and why
Presumably, many consumers think that because it's on a digital format, the picture and sound should be "clean".

If anything, these shitty mixes sound worse on better equipment.
