The film had Angelina Jolie, and Salma Hayek, two actual movie stars, as leads, and whose films routinely do well at the box office.
Richard Madden and Kit Harrington had both been in Game of Thrones, with Kit in one of the lead roles in GoT.
Gemma Chan has been a lead in a crapload of British TV shows, and had been a supporting actor in a number of films which were major box office releases.
And Kumail Nanjiani, actually has a pretty good resume of TV roles, and in theatrically released films.
Also, the film was a MARVEL film.
On paper, the “Moneyball” math, probably looked like a fairly sure thing.
I most people behind a film probably don’t calculate the “MONEYPIT” calculations or possibilities.
Nanjiani has been in Hollywood long enough that he should have been able to calculate the possibility of a movie plonking like a giant turd though.

This is crazy, because 99.9% of actors would kill for the type of work he has gotten throughout his career.

The problem of course is they don't understand the backend of the business. To push Mid or nobody IPs, you need either an elite A-Lister lead (Cumberbatch) or an elite creative (Favreau, Gunn, etc.). Visual-wise, Eternal was probably the most beautifully shot Marvel movie out there. The fact that they didn't use much green screen is a big plus. The action scenes and effects were innovative. Yeah there's nothing wrong with therapy, but most people are not actually in therapy, they're in "pay $100 a week to be emotional for 50 minutes at someone" or "pay $100 a week to have a bullshit nothing conversation like all of your other interactions because you're 0% introspective and deep down dont even want to really change"
Actual therapy is challenging and confronting and most importantly, short-term. It varies, but a few months equaling a dozen or so sessions is plenty of time to make a massive amount of progress. If you're actually doing work with them. When you hear someone say they've been going to a therapist for years you know that it's not serious. That's just a friend he hires to listen and agree with him.
