This movie has too many plot contrivances.

Why didn't the archaeologist bring a satellite phone to the ruins that had no cell service?

Why did the college students trust a random stranger to take them to an uncharted area?

Why didn't they plan for the way back?

Why did the German guy assume his archaeologist brother was safe when he didn't come back at the expected time?

Why didn't they just burn the vines?

Why didn't they toss vine pieces at the villagers from the top of the pyramid to create a diversion?

This film came out in 2008. Widespread cellphone use was only recent, going without cell service was normal. Especially going for a hike. Basically all four of your top points are "that's the way life used to be".
idk about point 5, did they have fire?
point 6 - I mean go outside right now and see how far you can throw a piece of vine. that ain't going anywhere.

>people getting stompted to death or trapped in a burning building because they are stuck
Another good idea that hasn't been done. Like a Junji Ito unexplainable body horror kind of film, people are there's some kind of phenomenon causing crowd crushes to happen in populated areas. Like people become magnetized to go to certain areas and all end up trampling each other.
Would cost too much in extras unfortunately.

>Widespread cellphone use was only recent, going without cell service was normal.

Satellite phones existed for decades. If you're an archaeologist, it makes no sense to not have one, especially in a remote location that's not on the map.

>idk about point 5, did they have fire?

They were able to create torches to explore the inside of the pyramid.

>I mean go outside right now and see how far you can throw a piece of vine.

One of the female characters was able to throw one piece from the base of the pyramid to a Mayan child standing on the edge of the forest. From the top, they could ball up vine pieces with a piece vine attach to the end of each vine ball and do hammer throws without being attacked by the villagers. The men look like they play sports, so they should be able to do it easily.

They were on vacation in mexico, just doesn't seem that big of a deal that a gung-ho explorer probably strapped for cash wouldn't have a satellite phone.
You'd still have to throw it the length of the pyramid, and I can't remember much but basically they have bows or guns or some shit and you just have an arm so you'd always be at a disadvantage. Just seems like they'd push it back with a shovel and that'd be it.
The fire though, that's a bit of a LOTR eagle I'll give you that. Maybe it's like wet wood and just doesn't burn. I imagine the book would explain it, since it's based on one.

Also outside of the paralysis thing the movie is almost beat for beat identical to another movie called Alone. I actually haven't watched it yet, mostly because of the webm someone posted where in one shot, Alice clearly yanks a real kitten by the neck to piss off the fat fuck trying to corner her, before throwing a fake one on the ground in the following shot. That really pissed me off compared to most horror movies. I get it's the only scene like that but just watching it made me feel genuine anger toward the character Alice and director / writer / producer Alfred Sole because of the genuine animal abuse on screen, knowing they likely did multiple takes. If any consolation, he killed himself back in 2022.

That's one thing I love about live plays, the set element is more than just "we can't give you a mountain so here's a paint of one", the painting itself is art you get to experience. Same reason SFX are so fun, and why CGI is either so realistic you can't tell, or uncanny valley. Very rarely is CGI created with an artistic aim.

>Fear No Evil (1969)

>The Premonition (1976)
>The House That Would Not Die (1970)
>The Manitou (1978)
>Fear No Evil (1981)
>Fright (1971)
>Superbeast (1972)
>Grave of the Vampire (1972)
>Pandemonium (1982)
>Night Train Murders (1975)
>Konga (1961)
>The Nesting (1981)
>Stanley (1972)
>Horror High (1973)
>Doctor Blood's Coffin (1961)
>Dance Macabre (1992)
>Terror (1978)
>Devil Rider (1991)
>Nightwing (1979)
>Shadow of the Hawk (1976)
>Trauma (1993)
>Calendar Girl Murders (1984)
>Child in the Night(1990)
>Are You in the House Alone? (1978)

Impromptu selections from streaming services will fill in the rest. I like to do double or triple features, and I usually get in around 60-70 movies by Halloween Night, on which I tend to do rewatches of Halloween classics

Yeah, I respect how almost his entire casts are always just people from old and often obscure /hor/ror movies. I like going through the cast list after one of his movies and seeing who was in what. It was real swell of him to give Margot Kidder a role in Halloween II decades after Hollywood had unceremoniously dumped her, probably her last notable role.
Him teaming up with Waxwork Records to give a few old movies an official soundtrack release was cool too.

I mean he's a WW1 vet that comes home to see Pearl's parents decaying. He clearly always had the potential to kill and defend thanks to war experience. Not sure why he stayed with her, though, after seeing her parents decaying at the table and the fact she was fucking the projectionist while he was away.

Holy fuck I’m on to Terrifier 2 and the gore is fucking brutal hahaha. I thought the first one was brutal, but this one is way worse. Am I a horror rookie? I mostly watch older junk so I’ve never seen anything like the Terrifier series. Even stuff like Planet Terror and Tarrantino was more like funny silly gore. Terrifier gore is actually pretty brutal to look at. Also I like the cutie clown girl.

I imagine her psychotic stare along with the corpses induced panic in him, and then when he helped her clean up, it locked him in. The rest was probably a slow erosion of his humanity from the guilt and having a crazy wife.

I'm still going to watch it since I love the first 4. I also tend to watch entire series regardless if I like them, just because of autism. I didn't like smile and still watched the sequel, will watch the 3rd if there is one.

No, I wouldn't call you a rookie for finding the gore over the top and brutal. They did well with all of that considering the budget. The story is pretty dumb and cringe overall, but I can't fault them for the technical achievements.

I pirate everything, I don't go to the theater anymore. Once it hits streaming, I'll pirate it and give it a watch. Since it dropped the FF aspect, it means that HITHD is the undisputed king of American FF horror at the moment.

Hmm ya the closest thing I can think of is the Rob Zombie movies. Maybe I have to rewatch those. I can’t remember how it compares to this.

Hmm you’re definitely right. 1 had some silly moments like riding the tiny clown bike. But 2 is straight up like serving candy out of a head type junk. I think I’m more into the campy Evil Dead type stuff, but 1 was way darker and scarier for sure.
