Captain Disillusion is pretty cheesy and perhaps borderline reddit at times, but irrespective of that I honestly admire his sincerity and commitment to the bit. He's been doing this for 18 years now and has barely changed anything about his style, his delivery, or the silly make-up. It's comfy. Ostensibly he might seem similar to AVGN or the Nostalgia Critic, but unlike those two, behind the silly performance gimmick he clearly knows what he's talking about. There's a lot of neat info about how VFX and video trickery works that he can make entertaining even if you haven't the slightest interest in AfterEffects or whatever. It's always neat watching him reverse-engineer how some viral video did an effect. His breakdown of the VFX in Flight of the Navigator is probably the best /tv/-related vid he's put out.
KaptainKristian's older videos are classics IMO, though I'm not sure I can call them video essays since most are only about 10 mins long. He's incredibly to the point, with no waffling, just voiceover and very high quality editing. Though I've not watched any of his recent uploads from the last few years, so I don't know if he's still any good.
And he's not /tv/, but I also like Ahoy. Again, straight to the point, very well produced, to the point documentaries simply looking over the production history of classic vidya (and smaller bits on /k/ weapons in vidya too).
