The drama comes from a simple man unable to reconcile his desire with his knowledge that what he's doing will never be accepted by society in his lifetime. Jack knows it too but hes clever and rich enough to just do it on the downlow with other rich guys or prostitutes in Mexico. That's the secondary tragedy of the film, that while Ennis genuinely loved Jack and is distraught to learn of his death, imagining he had to have been beaten to death instead of believing there'd been an accident, Jack was perfectly content to fuck any other man throughout his life. They both married women and had kids, but Jack really meant something to Ennis, whereas Ennis was just a good reliable lay for Jack
