The scary thing is it influences you even if you think you escaped it and are self-aware of it. So those who are not self-aware, who do not think about it, are straight up taken over invasion of the body snatchers style
Also an element unstated for why this became/is a trend is that it's adoptions of the sassy-speak of gays and or drag queens.

Heard speculation it was the bacon industry funding it, but it's more simply just you had One creative instance of bacon, or one original instance, and it got ran into the fucking ground by repetition. You'll see similar shit with any kind of meme from the late 2000s to early 2010s. I'd seen an ancient originated on /tg/ story of critical fails leading to accidental romance between an enemy orc and a party member repeated by people who stole it and passed it off as organically their own. Why did they steal it? Because that's the reddit sentiment, the social media (not 4chan) sentiment of wanting to seem cool by stealing someone else's shit and passing it off as your own.

Have a book about how to write (eye is towards screenplays but any writing) and in the intro the guy notes the majority of people simply try and regurgitate something they've already seen, just go "I Liked XYZ, so I'll just imitate XYZ". They do no alchemical process to transform it into something unique to themselves. The golden example is star wars: OG star wars was Lucas taking a witches' brew of buck rogers or flash gordon, serial adventure stories, ww2 dogfighting, samurai films, casablanca, ww2 spy/sabotage films and making a really unique result. What has every single star wars film or tv show been since then, without exception?
Star wars
Star wars
Star wars but now X or Y Or Z.
