one of the most overrated movies ever made, I don't get what people see in it,its basically a simple remake of a dickens-story but done with more jest and irony

>man has family and does good in his community
>wants to die
>is reminded of how people can leave their mark on a community and how big of one he has had by showing what life would be like without him
Its actually a pretty good movie. No idea what dickens story youre referring to? A Christmas Carol? Definetly different as regards the impact.

The more I think about it the less I care for it. Probably in my bottom 20 movies i've ever seen.

My only explanation for its success is that it was there at the right time, in 1946 ex soldiers that had been demobilized only a year before would relate to the theme of restarting a normalfag life, and from this initial run it got stuck into cult movie status. The movie is just watchable.

except that at the time it was overlooked by almost everyone, and didn't develop a following until the 1960s

It's not that deep. It's just a feel good movie that's competently made that boomers can put on at christmas.
