The Long Tomorrow was made by Moebius. Moebius made comics like Incal with Jodorowsky. Many years before this comic, Jodorowsky built a team of guys to help him make Dune but the film was never made. See Jodorowsky's Dune documentary:

The Colonial Marines were armed exactly the way they needed to be to take down tons of xenos, and had access to even more equipment. They were hampered by not being allowed to shoot the xenos with their machineguns and a fairly green LT giving orders by the book and numbers instead of adapting or pulling back when it became obvious that his team could not shoot without damaging the cooling towers, before their first encounter with the xenos.
If you know what they are, and how the xenos fight, they're not much of an issue if your sole purpose is to eradicate them.
The problems come when people want to capture them for study.

On the other hand, minus the Xeno's encounter with Morrow, it has absolutely dominated every fight it has been a part of in it's short life.
It also didn't even see Morrow when it got tasered from behind into unconsciousness.
All it knew when it woke up from the cocoon was that there were two more soldiers with annoying guns right next to it and it tore them to pieces and then went into it's "There's one left, should I incapacitate it and drag this meat to a nest?" mode. Which was the same mode it went into with Hermit both before and after it's rampage in the ballroom. This allowed Morrow to get the drop on it in the ballroom, and the xeno snapped out of it with Morrow at the elevator because more soldiers showed up.
As for the meathook fight with Wendy, I think it went crazy because it expected to easily kill the human shaped thing. It had been doing exactly that for hours. Now the man shaped thing has stabbed a hole in your tongue, and is as strong as you are, and is dragging you around.
The xeno was super pissed and not thinking straight.
That's my take.

Exactly, Alien is a "haunted house" scenario, where there are deliberately no reasonable weapons available and you have no real escape route, plus the xeno has all the advantages it can possibly have, outside of numbers.
Nothing that is shown about the survivability or durability of the xenomorph in Alien is contradicted by Aliens, which is also, yet another case of corporate sabotage hedging the chances in the xenos' favor. Meaning that the xenos have never ever done anything close to a "fair fight" (on screen) which makes sense, since that is the intelligent way to fight, but does not mean that they shouldn't get absolutely BTFO'd by anyone with access to even just conventional "modern" firearms, standard combat tactics and cursory understanding of what the xenos look like, keeping their distance and to watch for melee guerilla tactics.
