The directors are immaterial as to whether a movie looks good or not. It's the production, editing, make-up, wardrobe, story board artists, and lighting crew. And those are owned by the big studios, who merely lend those crews to their favorite directors, which gives the false image that they made the film look good. As soon as any genius director loses those crews, their films suddenly look like and piece together like shit.

Films are a collaborative effort and everybody knows that, but those talented people will create a disparate mess without a proper visionary who is guiding all of their creative ideas into something that is actually cohesive, functional and effective.
